Class: Grade 8 Math (8WH)

Oulton
Date: Friday, April 17th, 2015

Teacher: Mr.

Lesson Title: The Walking Dead

Size: 20-SM/19-WH

Class

Time: 50 mins
Curriculum Outcomes:

Learning Objectives:
1. Students will be able to use nets to determine side lengths of rectangular prism faces.
2. Students will be able to calculate the total surface area of right rectangular prisms and square prisms using the
dimensions provided.

Materials:
Walking Dead Activity Sheets (modified and non-modified) (20)

Bell-work in page protectors (blue binder behind my desk)

Math 8 textbooks + Calculators (at back of room, students know where they are)
Number Sense boxes
Polydron shapes

A. Bell work (7-8 minutes):

Students will come in and start working on the Bell work problems found in page protectors.
They can work in pairs or on their own. After about 4-5 minutes, start going over the answers (even
if students are not finished). Use this time to assess individuals as part of the Formative Checklist as well as provide hints if the questions are difficult. These problems are related to the unit
outcomes as well as improve algebra skills (ongoing outcome).
B. Explain The Walking Dead Activity (5-7 minutes):
Students will work individually to determine the surface area of various bite wounds. These bite
wounds are actually nets for right rectangular or square prisms. The students will then determine
whether the surface area is below a certain criteria (400cm2) in order to determine whether the person
is curable or will become a walker (incurable zombie).
C. Walking Dead Activity (20-25 minutes):
Students should be using their strategies to solve for the total surface area (writing out each individual
face area and taking the sum). Students might have difficulties with side lengths; they may use the
polydron connector shapes to assist them if they need them.

D. When students finish (10-15 minutes):

As students finish, have them work on their Number sense boxes (they have partners, but can start
working on them individually if their partner has not finished). These boxes are designed to
practice their Number sense outcomes on an ongoing basis.

Differentiation Strategies:
Special activity sheets are designed for modified students. The activities are exactly the same but
more information has been provided and the strategy has been laid out for these students. They are
working toward their modified outcomes which involves using dimensions to calculate area and then
add up those areas.
