Backgrounder
WHO WE ARE
The Martin Luther King Jr. Family Outreach Center was created after the successful
completion of a summer camp including 42 economically disadvantaged youth. Put
on by the Bethel AME Church, the summer camp was so successful an organization
was made. The center focuses on improving the quality of life for children, youth,
and families in Spokane through an array of culturally responsive educational and
social services within the framework of Dr. Kings vision of equal respect, treatment,
and accessibility for all people.
GOALS

Encourage the families to take responsibility for their success

Prepare children to succeed in school and life

Provide leadership opportunities for youth

Celebrate cultural diversity in Spokane

Foster meaningful connections between community members from all walks of


life.

OUR PROGRAMS
The Martin Luther King Jr. Family Outreach Center has several programs that allow
for the development and benefit of families in the Spokane area. For additional

1. Child and Youth Services Department- works with Spokane area children and
youth, and provides them with a safe, holistic environment where they can learn and
grow within a framework that includes active parent involvement

Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program- pre-school program


designed to help low-income or at-risk children and their families.

Community Preschool Program- Designed for children ages 3.5-5 years old
and accepts state and private pay.

Wrap-Around Child Care- before or after school care for school age children.

Fulfillment-Achieved-Maturity-Enrichment Program (FAME)- Structured after


school program for children who attend Grant, Sheridan, Franklin, and
Roosevelt elementary schools.

Summer Youth Academy (SYA)- Structured 9-10 week summer program


designed to serve youth between the ages of 3.5 and 12 years old.

Teen Leadership Program (TLP)- Enlists teen participants to serve as


classroom aides, preparing them for the workforce by providing them with an
opportunity to develop social and work skills in a community-based setting.

2. Family Services Department- strives to provide local families with a support


structure and nurturing environment in which parents actively participate in
programs that help provide the tools necessary for their childrens future success.

Prevention Services- targeted to low and moderate income families who are
striving to make financial security, family stability, healthy relationships, and
educational success a reality for their children

Family Relationship Programso

Circle of Security Parenting- a 4-8 week psych-educational group


based on parenting relationships focuses on the developmental
attachment needs of all people from birth to adulthood, and offers an
individualized approach to understanding and meeting the emotional
needs of children.

Sliding Scale Professional Services- provides parenting and attachment


assessments including home evaluation for use in custody
determinations and parenting plans.

Family Emergency Services Program- individualized life skills education in


budgeting, family nutrition, job search activities, financial assistance for basic
needs to local families, back-to-school supplies for children and youth as well
as holiday assistance to MLK Center Families.

Crime Victim Advocacy- Helps individuals to understand the impact of crime


and assesses their immediate needs and concerns. Free and available to
victims of hate crimes, gang violence, assault, robbery/burglary, property
crimes, landlord issues, DUI, and elder abuse.

Intervention Services- Seek to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty,


oppression, abuse, and or neglect are referred by the state Department of
Child and Family Services.

Family Preservation Services- Provide home visitation, parent education,


cultural support and concrete assistance to keep children out of foster care or
help them return home when parents have made the changes that are needed
to keep them safe.

Professional Services- Psycho-social and parenting assessments, video-based


parent-child attachment therapy, individual counseling, family counseling, and
hands-on-parent education to families with children in foster care.
