    Earthquakes are usually caused when rock fractures suddenly along a fault line. This releases stored energy and causes seismic waves, making the ground shake. When two blocks of rock or tectonic plates rub against each other, they stick together for a while without moving. Stress builds until the rocks break, causing an earthquake. During an earthquake, the plates or blocks start moving and continue until they get stuck again.
