Learning Issue
Students have difficulty converting between different
metric units and understanding that metric units can
be represented in a number of forms. This difficulty
leads to poor estimation and generalisation skills.
For example: 1000g= 1kg or 2x500g objects weigh
1kg
Children learn to measure efficiently by first perceiving the attribute to be measured, then comparing and
ordering examples of the attribute... Learning about measurement should involve extensive practical
experiences involving manipulation of materials at all stages, with important emphasis on estimation skills.
(Booker et. Al., 2010)
Students should be encourage to think and estimate, and then measure...As student familiarity with the
unit sizes increase the accuracy of their estimate will improve. (Siemon et.al., 2011)

The learning issue focuses on the representation and conversion of
different metric units in order to become proficient in estimation and
generalisation skills.
The curriculum links with the issue as it requiring the students to use
concrete resources to measure, compare and order objects which can
be used to help the students understand that metric units can be
displayed in a number of forms.

The curriculum also asks the students to choose appropriate measurements and
convert between the metric units which links directly to the issue of students not being
able to convert between different metric units.
The kit provides concrete resources and tasks that enable the students to measure,
order and compare objects using the correct metric units. The kit also provides tasks
that require the students to convert between metric units and display measurement in a
number of forms.
Year 3 : Measure, order and compare objects using familiar metric units of length, mass and capacity (ACMMG061)
Year 4: Use scaled instruments to measure and compare lengths, masses, capacities and temperatures (ACMMG084)
Year 5: Choose appropriate units of measurement for length, area, volume, capacity and mass (ACMMG108)
Year 6: Convert between common metric units of length, mass and capacity (ACMMG136)
Australian curriculum, assessment and reporting authority, 2014.
TASK CARDS
The tasks cards are vibrant and attractive
colours that symbolise different levels of
learning.
Green= simple/basic
Yellow= Intermediate
Red= Challenging.
Each year level has a set of task cards to
cater for the measurement content
descriptors.
Each set of task cards have the task on
one side and teacher notes and possible
differentiation to cater for students needs
on the opposite side.
Each years levels set of cards also have
resources that are required and the
content descriptor clearly stated.
TASK CARDS
Each of the task cards have clear
dot points of how the task should
be executed.
Each task card either uses
resources from the kit or a variety
of resources from the kit and from
the classroom. i.e personal
belonging and the scales.
Each task card focuses on
different skills such as social
skills, problem solving skills,
prediction and estimating skills.
MY METRIC MATHS
WORKSHEETS
The My Metric Math worksheet book
provides the teachers with a Broad
range of choices of possible
worksheets that they can use in the
classroom.
The worksheets are broken up into
categories for the subject matter:
Mass
Volume
Length
Each section has a variety of possible
worksheets surrounding
measurement including comparing,
measuring and converting.

SCALES
Each set of scales require the
student to use different
techniques and skills.
The scales are used in the
mass related task cards.
Spring Scales:
Requires the student to
correctly read the number
that the pointer is on.
Students use problem
solving skills, comparing
skills and
prediction/estimation
skills when engaging with
spring scale tasks.
Balance scales:
Requires the students to
balance the scales using
different objects. Students can
also test which object weighs
more or less. Students use
comparing and problem solving
skills when using this scale.
electronic scales:
Requires the students to
read a digital reading of the
mass of an object. Student
can adjust the metric unit
on the device. This device
is good for learners with
difficulties. These scales
can be used for comparing
and prediction/estimating
activities.
MASS EQUIPMENT
The mass equipment requires the use of scales, however these weight
sets can be manipulated in a number of ways and can be used for a
variety of different activities. The hanging weights are to be used with
the spring scale and can be used with the other scales however the
hexagon weight set can not be used on the spring scales.
The mass objects can be
manipulated in the tasks to help
the student develop an
understanding that mass can be
represented in a number of
forms as well using the sets to
convert between metric units.
VOLUME EQUIPMENT
LENGTH EQUIPMENT
The length equipment is very basic. The length
equipment consists of two kinds of measurement
devices, a ruler and a tape measure. These objects
are manipulated in the tasks by having the students
measure personal belongings and real life
items/objects. This provides the learners with a
sense of ownership to the tasks.
