States and how Americans expanded citizenship over the centuries.
C5.3.8 Explain and give examples of the role of the Fourteenth Amendment in
extending the protection of individual rights against state action.

Objectives:

Instructions: Welcome to Week 9 of the online U.S. Government course! Please complete the
following activities for this week. Make sure that you complete each activity by the time it is
due. Due dates are located at the end of each activity listed below.
(1) Complete Week 9 Pre-Test. Read Chapter 5 Section 1 (pages 156-160). Create a new
document with your Google Drive account and title it Your Name Week 9
Activities. On this new document you will type out each of the Key Terms and
Concepts for Section 1, as well as their definitions. Make sure to label this section
Ch. 5 Vocabulary Terms: Sec 1. Complete this activity by 11:59pm Monday of
Week 9.
(2) Read Chapter 5 Section 2 (pages 162-168). In your "Week 9 Activities document,
type out each of the Key Terms and Concepts for Section 2, as well as their
definitions. Make sure to label this section Ch. 5: Vocabulary Terms: Sec 2. In your
"Week 9 Activities document, create a new section titled Aliens and write out the
five categories of aliens according to US law. Watch the Getting a Green Card and
The Border Crisis videos. Complete this activity by 11:59pm Tuesday of Week 9.
(3) View both the Immigration Timeline link and Timeline on Immigration document
found on the course website. Watch the History of Immigration in the US for
Dummies video. Complete this activity by 11:59pm Wednesday of Week 9.
(4) Read Chapter 5 Section 3 (pages 169-172). In your "Week 9 Activities document,
type out each of the Key Terms and Concepts for Section 3, as well as their
definitions. Make sure to label this section Ch. 5: Vocabulary Terms: Sec 3. Take
the US Citizenship and Immigration Services Naturalization Self-Test 1 & 2 and take
a screen shot of your test scores and upload them to your shared folder. Create a new

blog post and insert your screen shots from the above tests, as well as write your
thoughts on the tests. Complete this activity by 11:59pm Thursday of Week 9.
(5) Visit the Discussion Blog and answer the questions for Week 9. Review your Week 9
Google Drive document. Complete the Week 9 Post-Test. Complete this activity by
11:59pm Friday of Week 9.

1. Do you feel that the path to citizenship is fair for non-citizens? Why or why not?

2. If you were in charge of immigration, what would be your policies towards it? Would you
hold a quota system? Would you restrict immigration from certain places? Would you
allow only refugees in? Would you let anyone and everyone in who wanted to?

3. Why do you think so many people want to immigrate to the United States?
