The positive value of H shows that carbon with +4

oxidation state is more stable. (CO2 is more stable than CO)
The negative value of H shows that lead with +2 oxidation
state is more stable. (PbO is more stable than PbO2)
Descending Group 14, the stability of +2 oxidation state
increases while the stability of +4 oxidation state decreases.
The increase in stability of +2 oxidation state is due to the
inert pair effect.
SiCl4, GeCl4,SnCl4 and PbCl4 are hydrolysed by water readily.
Si, Ge, Sn, and Pb atoms in the tetrachlorides have empty d
orbitals that can form dative bonds with water molecules.
The respective dioxides are formed.
White hydrogen chloride fumes are released.
SiCl4 + 2H2O SiO2 + 4HCl
CCl4 cannot be hydrolysed by water because the carbon
atom does not have d orbitals that can form dative bonds
with water molecules.

Reactivity of halogens with hydrogen decreases down the

group.
On going down Group 17 (from F to Cl to Br to I):
The atomic radius/size of halogen increases
The bond length of H-X increases. (X: halogen)
The strength of covalent bond between halogen atom and
hydrogen decreases/ bond energy of H-X decreases
Thermal stability decreases

19. It is the heat released when 1 mol of glucose is burnt

a) i. completely in excess oxygen under standard conditions.
ii. Each steps of enthalpy change is 1 mark, arrow is 1mark, axis
is 1 mark.

b) i.

H c= -2811.2 kJmol-1
Heat released in the combustion of benzoic acid= Cx T
where C= heat capacity of bomb calorimeter
0.0250 x 3230.0 = C x 14.4
= 5.61 kJ0C-1

ii.

Heat released during combustion of 1-propanol,Q=
