I am writing this letter in support of J. Ryan Leist as a candidate for English Department Chair in your district. For the past year, as Math/Science Divisional at Elgin High School, I have worked with Mr. Leist who is the Language and Fine Arts Divisional. Ryans positive attributes are numerous. He is very intelligent and analytical yet has a clear view of how different components of a situation fit into the big picture. His interest in positive student outcomes is paramount and he consistently seeks to ensure that those outcomes are met. One of Ryans strengths is his creativity at confronting a challenge. He has always been a person I could ask for inventive ways to solve a problem. He is a person with suggestions and answers. As colleagues at Elgin High School we have worked together on several committees, such as the SIP team and the Standards Based Grading (SBG) subcommittee, where I have observed Ryans commitment to effect change in our organization. His contributions to these teams are significant. For example, together Ryan and I drafted policies and procedures for a school wide implementation of SBG. This included crafting language regarding mastery levels, the use of assessment, determination of grades, and policies concerning revisions and absences. Ryans knowledge of best practices is outstanding, and he has the ability to explain and assist teachers in using these practices. On many occasions, Ryan and I have had discussions involving educational reform, teacher coaching, and instructional best practices. He has demonstrated abilities in those areas as well as in written/verbal communication and dedication to continuous improvement. Mr. Leist has my highest recommendation. He would be a wonderful asset to any district. If you have any further questions with regard to his background or qualifications, please do not hesitate to contact me at 847888-5100 x4852 or jeanjolley@u-46.org. Sincerely,
Jean Jolley Divisional Chair of Math and Science AVID Coordinator SBG Subcommittee Chair
