Hindu fast have a deep spiritual and religious
significance. According to Hindu scriptures, fasting
helps create an attachment with the God by
establishingaharmoniousrelationshipbetweenthe
bodyandthesoul.Thisisthoughttobeimperative
forthewellbeingofahumanbeingasitnourishesbothhis/herphysicalandspiritualdemands.

KarwaChauthFast

'Karwa Chauth' is a ritual of fasting observed by married Hindu women seeking the longlife, wellbeing and prosperity of their
husbands. Married women keep a strict fast and do not take even a drop of water. It is the most important and difficult fast
observedbymarriedHinduwomen.Itbeginsbeforesunriseandendsonlyafterofferingprayersandworshipingthemoonatnight.
No food or water can be taken after sunrise. The fast is broken once the moon is sighted and rituals of the day have been
performed.Atnightwhenthemoonappears,womenbreaktheirfastafterofferingwatertothemoon.

ImportanceOfFasting

Hindusbelieveitisnoteasytounceasinglypursuethepathofspiritualityinone'sdailylife.Thereforeaworshipermuststriveto
imposerestrainsontogetthemindfocused.Andoneformofrestraintisfasting.However,fastingisnotonlyapartofworship,but
agreatinstrumentforselfdisciplinetoo.Itisatrainingofthemindandthebodytoendureandhardenupagainstallhardships,to
persevereunderdifficultiesandnotgiveup.

MedicativeProperties

TheancientIndianmedicalsystemofAyurvedaseesthebasiccauseofmanydiseases
astheaccumulationoftoxicmaterialsinthedigestivesystem.Regularcleansingoftoxic
materials keeps one healthy. By fasting, the digestive organs get rest and all body
mechanisms are cleansed and corrected. A complete fast is good for heath, and the
occasional intake of warm lemon juice during the period of fasting prevents the

KarvaChauthdatefallsaboutninedaysbeforeDiwaliontheKartikKiChouththe
fourth day of the waning moon or the dark fortnight, some time in October or
November.

MotherinlawpreparesanelaborateSargi(thepredawnKarvaChauthmeal)whenherdaughterinlawobservesherfirstfast.
She wakes up much early to prepare a sumptuous and lavish meal inclusive of sweets and other delicacies for daughterinlaw.

FirstBaya

BayaisagiftgiventoadaughtersmotherinlawontheoccasionofKarvaChauth.Itusuallyconsistsofsaltedmathris,dryfruits
and some gifts. This Baya is a little more special when the daughter is observing her first Karva Chauth. Mothers of newly wed
daughtersbringgiftsforallherfamilymembers.Someutensilsarealsoincludedinthebayawhicharetobedistributedamongst
womenwhojointhenewlywedonherfirstKarvaChauthPuja.

ElaboratePujaPreparations

ElaboratepreparationsaremadeforthecustomaryeveningKarvaChauthPujainafamilywhereanewlyweddaughterinlaw
observes her first KarvaChauth. Married female relatives are invited to participate in the puja. The newly married woman often
wearsherbridallehangaoraheavysareeandadornsherselfwithlotofjewelryandmakeup.Afterthepujaceremonysheseeks
blessingsforhappymarriedlifefromallelderwomen.Thenewlywedwomandistributesmathrisorutensilsamongsttheladiesthat
wereapartofbaya.

GiftsfromHusband

HusbandofthewomanwhoobservesherfirstKarvaChauthfeelproudandgreattoseeherbetterhalfobservingsucharigorous
fastforhim.HegetsoverwhelmedwithloveandrespectforherwifeandpampersherwithloadsofKarvaChauthgifts.Thesedays
husbandsalsotakesherwifeoutforadinnertosaveherfromthedrudgeryofdayscookingwork.

TheRitual

KarwaChauthisconsideredoneofthemostimportantfastsobservedbythemarriedHinduwomen.Onthisdaythewomen
prayforthewelfareandlonglifeoftheirhusbands.Thefestivalisfollowedmainlyinthenorthernpartsofthecountry.

Marriedwomeneatfoodearlyinthemorning,beforesunrise.Theyarenotsupposedtoeatorevendrinkwaterduringtheday.

ThePujaProcess

Thepoojapreparationsstartadayinadvance.Marriedwomenbuytheshringarorthetraditionaladornmentsandtheother
poojaitemslikethekarwa,matthi,heenaetc.
Early in the morning they prepare food and have it before sunrise. The morning passes by in other festive activities like
decoratinghandandfeetwithheena,decoratingthepoojathaliandmeetingfriendsandrelatives.
Inthelateafternoonwomengatheratacommonplaceliketempleoragardenorsomeones'placewhohasarrangedthepooja.

TheessentialsofthisgatheringandlisteningoftheKarwachauthstory,aspecialmudpot,thatisconsideredasymboloflord
Ganesha,ametalurnfilledwithwater,flowers,idolsofAmbikaGaurMata,GoddessParwatiandsomefruits,mathiandfoodgrains.
Apartofthisisofferedtothedeitiesandthestoryteller.

Earlier an idolof Gaur Matawas made using earth andcowdung. Now


justanidolofGoddessParwatiiskept.Everyonelightsanearthenlampin
their thalis while listening to the Karwa story. Sindoor, incense sticks and
ricearealsokeptinthethali.
At this time the women wear heavy saris or chunries in red , pink or
other bridal colors, and adorn themselves with all other symbols of a
marriedwomenlike,nosepin,tika,bindi,chonp,bangles,earringsetc.
Oncethemoonrises,thewomenseeitsreflectioninathaliofwater,or
through a dupatta or a sieve. They offer water to the moon and seek
blessings. They pray for the safety, prosperity and long life of their
husbands.Thismarkstheendofthedaylongfast.
