To develop committed change agents for India through a

multidisciplinary programme guided by eminent leaders

and scholars of our time.

About YIF
The Young India Fellowship (YIF), a one-year multi-disciplinary postgraduate programme in Liberal
Studies and Leadership of Ashoka University is run in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania
(Penn), University at Michigan, Carleton College, King's College, London and Sciences Po. It brings
together a group of bright young Indians from across the country and diverse disciplines and trains them
to become socially committed agents of change for the future.

Partnering with the Best

The Young India Fellowship was launched in 2011 in collaboration with University of Pennsylvania's
School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, whose Dean co-signs YIF certificates. In 2012, YIF entered
into a partnership with Carleton College, one of America's top-ranked liberal arts colleges; Sciences Po, a
leading university in France and currently ranked first in Europe for Political and International Studies
and University of Michigan. In March 2014, YIF entered into a partnership with King`s College, London.
Faculty from all these universities teach at YIF every year.

YIF at Ashoka
Ashoka University is an institution set up with a vision to create
India's first university in the class of the celebrated Ivy League and
top ranked international universities. It offers world-class liberal
education through a three-year undergraduate programme in
collaboration with institutions mentioned above. YIF is Ashoka
Universitys flagship postgraduate programme where Fellows and
graduates are awarded a postgraduate diploma in Liberal Studies
and Leadership.
The university campus is located 50 kilometers from New Delhi at
Rajiv Gandhi Education City in Kundli, Haryana in the National
Capital Region (NCR).

Why YIF?
Six Compelling Reasons

Exceptional
Mentors
Comprising well
known corporate
leaders, social
activists, researchers
and entrepreneurs,
YIF offers valuable
insights and advice to
the Fellows about
what they should do
next in life and how.

Inspiring Faculty
Fellows learn from renowned faculty, with
outstanding teaching and research credentials,
drawn from the best universities around the
globe.

Multidisciplinary Curriculum
Drawing broadly from such diverse disciplines as
literature, history, politics, economics, the sciences,
anthropology, ethics, mathematics and art
appreciation, the YIF curriculum fosters a deep
understanding of what it means to be liberally
educated.

Financial Support
Progressive corporate leaders, institutions and
philanthropists support YIF with sponsorships and
donations, offering opportunities to students from all
strata of society with partial or complete financial aid.

Experiential and
Integrated Learning
In addition to academic
instruction, Fellows are
coached in life skills
through well- designed
leadership workshops
and writing and
communications classes
along with training in
critical thinking and
problem- solving skills.
Through Experiential
Learning Modules
(ELM), they hone these
skills via real-life projects
from a variety of sectors
and learn to solve real
problems.

Unparalleled Network
Through their interactions with YIF founders,
mentors, faculty, and distinguished visitors, Fellows
have access to an unrivalled network of people from
whom to draw career, business and academic
opportunities.

Meet the Fellows

Young India Fellows are a group of 'first among equals', selected through a rigorous and nation-wide
search for achievements, passion and the desire to bring about change. There were 58 Fellows in the
founding class of 2012, 97 Fellows in the class of 2013, 100 Fellows in the class of 2014, and currently 200
Fellows in the class of 2015. The Fellows reflect India's geographical diversity and a rich texture of
backgrounds. From engineering to fashion design, film to agriculture, medicine to art, and law to
journalism; the cross flow of ideas from such varied experiences creates the best ground for learning.

You build a Trebuchet and you orchestrate a Flash Mob. You cross-dress and you write a 3000 word
essay. You're taught by professors from Yale and Penn and by the 'Wisest Man in India', Andre Beteille.
Talks by Madeleine Albright and Ramachandra Guha mark the starting and ending of your First
Term. You understand and then you self-understand. You live as one big family of 100. You are elated.
You have no time to breathe, and you suddenly begin to enjoy that. Memories are so pristine, you
want to capture everything in monochrome. Life in the fast lane goes by beautifully. You're with the
right people, in the right place, at the right time.
- Karan Bhola, Fellow 2014

Fellows Speak
Since YIF ended I had a huge list of things to do. I wanted to move to Kashmir
and do farming or something related to heritage and history. I started
researching and found a treasure of proverbs in Kashmiri and I started
illustrating and translating them in a blog. It got a lot of attention and from
that I also got around 20 volunteers from all over willing to work in heritage. I
have started a heritage project that focuses on oral traditions, history and the
architectural legacy of Kashmir.
Over the last month I got an academic paper published and got accepted to two
conferences, one at the Imperial College in London for July next year and one in
Prague this year. My paper was on Identity and Orientalism in arts. The work
I'm doing also revolves around ethnography. I now think that I shall be
applying for a master in anthropology and I am extremely excited.
For all this, I have you to thank. Else, I'd still have been sitting in front of excel
feeling sorry about my life. Thank you so much for the most stimulating year of
my life. In short, thank you for giving me the courage to change it.
- Onaiza Drabu, Fellow 2014, in a letter to Founding-Dean Pramath Sinha
Maybe this is what I should do! I might be good at
that! Aaw! I never thought this could be so
interesting! It's just been a week since we began
and such realisations have already flooded one's
mind and soul. Looking forward to a year at Young
