Timing: This lesson will span over one hour; it will be used as the
introduction lesson for a lesson sequence on Roman numerals.
Curriculum Outcomes:
MATHS: Tell time to the minute and investigate the relationship between units of time (ACMMG062)
HISTORY: Use historical terms (ACHHS082)
Student background: Students learnt about Roman numerals in their
previous maths lesson.
Lesson objectives: Students will use their knowledge Roman numerals
to tell the time using clocks that read in Roman numerals.

CONTENTS
Task Introduction: Telling the Time using Roman
Numerals
AIM: To get students to tell the time using Roman
numerals

Refresh the students on what they learnt in their


previous (put the table up on to the whiteboard
again, as this may help them).
Get them to sit down on the floor in front of a
smart board.
Play the game on the smartboard: it gets the
students to read the digits in order from lowest
to highest.
Ask the students if they can tell the time (using
a clock that tells the time using Roman
numerals).
Change the time on the clock a few times and
get them to tell you the time every time that
you do it.

Task development:
AIM: Give the students a work sheet to work on.

Tell the students to sit back down at their desks


Give the students a worksheet to tell the time
using Roman numerals (example attached to
lesson)
Allow the students to work with one another,
and let them pass around the clock to test one
