Introduction
Healthy Food is the food that is helpful to the body.
However, healthy foods are usually fresh, full of nutrients,
Healthy food sustain growth, repair and maintain vital
processes, keeps you fit and healthy, Also, it gives you a
strengthen and maintain the body and its functions.
Examples of healthy food are: (fruit, vegetables, nuts,
etc.).

(Alderman, 2015) (Defining Healthy Foods, 2013)

Junk food is the food that can harm rather than help the
body; it doesn't contain the nutrients your body needs to
stay healthy. As a result, you may feel chronically
fatigued and lack the energy you need to complete daily
tasks. For example: chips and other oily foods. None of
these foods are part of a healthy meal because of the
3

processing necessary to make them crispy, salty or

sweet. It is worth to note that obesity, addiction, and
Bone strength are some of effects caused by junk food on
humans health. (Side effects of Junk Food and Soft Drinks on health,
2015) (Fast Food Nutrition: Junk Food's Effect On Your Body, 2015)

The report concerns catering in Bahrain Polytechnic, the

aim of the report is to study the diet among the students
and staff in Bahrain Polytechnic.
Our hypothesis is that the students and staff preference
for food habits is junk over healthy, and by following this
report, we will figure out the preference of healthy of junk
diet.
The report contains the method and finding of
questionnaire survey of the students and results of
discussion with staff, after that a conclusion is drawn and
recommendations are made.
In this report of study we are testing 2 hypothesis that
states that students prefer healthy food more than junk
and other food and our second hypothesis was that
Bahrain Polytechnics has more healthy food than the
junk food in the food court.
4

Problem background:
During our research, we found out that in fact, some junk
food has zero fat and 50 percent of it can turn to stored
body fat. And as most people know, junk food is a primary
cause of the worldwide overfat epidemic thats affecting
the full spectrum of individuals, from the poor to the most
serious athletes; however, they should know that how
important it is to eat healthy food. Moreover, eating junk
food regularly will effect on their health so badly. (Maffetone,
2015)

Problem objectives:
Our objectives for this report are that we are hoping to
test whether or not the validity of our hypotheses which
is that the students at Polytechnic prefer junk over
healthy food. We are also hoping to test whether or not
the validity of our hypotheses that Bahrain Polytechnics
has more healthy food than the junk food.
Problem Description:

The problem that Bahrain Polytechnic faced was

competition between healthy and junk food, some of the
students at Bahrain polytechnic prefers eating junk food
and others do prefer eating healthy, However, the food
court at Bahrain Polytechnic sells healthy food more than
junk food, so by doing this survey we will recognize that
how many students are satisfied with the food at Bahrain
Polytechnic and how many of them are not.

Methodology
Data for this report was gathered from 24th May to 6th
June 2015; a questionnaire survey was carried out from
24th May-25th May 2015.
6

The questionnaires were distributed to a total of more

than 40 students, consisting from different majors, 5 from
degree and the rest are in CAP, 40 questionnaires were
received back.
We have chosen primary source of data collection in this
report and the method we are going to use is
questionnaire to collect data.
We have used the random sampling method in sending
out our questionnaire to nearly 50 students. We are going
to use the, mean, mode, median method to analysis our
result and find the total averages of people who prefer
junk food and those who prefer healthy food. As well as,
we will be using pie chart to see the number of answers
and preference.
We had used pie chart because its easy to analysis the
result, and because it is simple to analysis data with
different answers and to find the exact percentage of the
answers, also to recognize the preference of students
towards healthy or junk food. Also, pie chart highlights
the results with different color so its easy for us to
recognize the percentage exactly.
7

As well as we used column graph to analyze the majority

of students who are satisfied or not satisfied with the
price at the food court and the service, also it will help in
seeing the result to differentiate between who is satisfied
and who is not. However we will not be able to get the
exact percentage, but still we will be able to get an
approximate idea on who is satisfied and who is not or
who wants to bring some changes to the food court and
doesnt want. Also, graph shows the number of the
preference from the students as if theyre satisfied with
that is provided to them or they want more improvement.
In graph, we get different percentages of each answer, for
example: the number of the students who strongly
agrees, number of students who agrees, the number of
the students who disagree and the number of the
students who strongly disagree.
These results will help us to identify the preference of the
students towards the food court at Bahrain Polytechnic,
Also, it will help Bahrain Polytechnic to improve if there
are changes that students wants to have in the campus,
such as: improve in the food, changing the prices by
8

making it high or less, as well as improving the seating at

the food court. However, bringing a change in the food
court will attract students more.

What kind of service do you prefer?

Other; 5%
Served; 38%

Self-Service; 58%

It seems that (58%) of the students at Bahrain

Polytechnic prefer Self-Service than to be served,
although, there are (37%) of the students prefer to be
served as they dont like to serve themselves.

11

From the graph, we found the most polytechnic students

(30%) are nearly satisfied with the service in Bahrain
Polytechnics food court, although (27.5%) of the students
are average in their satisfaction with the service, unlikely
(5%) of the students are unsatisfied at all.

From the graph above, we found that there are many

different results about the price at Bahrain Polytechnics
food court. However, (30%) of the students think that the
price is reasonable, Also, (25%) of the students thinks
that its quite lower, Moreover, (17.5%) of the students
thinks the price is a bit high, On the other hand only
(15%) of the students thinks that the prices at the food
12

court are cheap. But (12.5%) of the students totally

agrees that the prices at Bahrain Polytechnics food court
are high.

13

From the graph above, you can see the results on how
students have responded in accordance to how much
they eat healthy food in a week. From the graph above,
14

we found that the average of students eating healthy

food in one week is 6, the standard deviation is 1.24, and
the median is 5 and the mode, which is more students, is
5.

15

From the graph above, you can see the results on how
students have responded in accordance to how much
they eat healthy food in a week. From the graph above,
we found that the average of students eating junk food in
one week is 6, the Standard deviation is 1.63, the Median
is 6 and the Mode, which is more students, is 1.

16

From the graph above, you can see the results on how
students have responded in accordance to how much
they eat healthy food in a week. From the graph above,
we found that the average of students buying food from
Bahrain Polytechnics food court is is 8.6, the Standard
deviation is 0.74, the Median is 9 and the Mode is 9.

17

From the graph above, you can see the results on how
students have responded in accordance to how much
they eat healthy food in a week. The mean of the result is
14.3, the Standard deviation is 5.92, the Median is 17 and
the Mode is 9. Our hypothesis for this question was that
students prefer healthy food more than junk and other
food. And through our Hypothesis analysis, the result was
that the P was LESS than 0.05 which means we reject it
and our null hypothesis was wrong from the beginning,
which means that students prefer junk and other food
rather than healthy.

food court have junk and other food rather than healthy
food.

Conclusion
From the above findings, it can be concluded that the
majority of students at Bahrain Polytechnic prefer Healthy
food at the food court, however there some different
opinions about eating Junk food as well.
Healthy food will lead people to a healthy and nutritious
life and to stay fit and active so they can achieve better
in their life as well as in their studies, also it will give the
proper energy needed for concentration and focus so that
we can spend our day perfectly during college.
Junk food, on the other hand, will lead people to laziness,
drowsiness and will make your energy less which will
make you feel tired and unfocused in your day, and thus
will not perform well.
Therefore, for the result shown above, it seems that
students at Bahrain Polytechnic prefer eating both kind of
food. However, students should eat healthy food more
than junk to stay energetic all day. On the other hand,
20

eating junk food sometimes is good; you bring chances to

the type of the meal you eat every day.

Recommendation
In our survey, we received recommendations from some
students who did the survey. First, bringing fast food
restaurants like McDonald and Hardees. This
recommendation is so popular between students,
especially that the University of Bahrain in Sakheer has
many fast food restaurants in their food court. Secondly,
its related to one of our question which is about the type
of the service, the answer states that self-service is better
and that would give the students more control to choose
their own food and diet. This answer really supports the
question about the kind of service were (60%) of the
responses agreed that its better to have self-service than
to be served. Last but not the least, the answer stated
that the food court needs more healthy food; even
through that (55.8%) said that Bahrain Polytechnics food
court serve healthy food, but still they need to improve it
and bring more healthy and fresh food. Finally, we
recommend that the Polytechnics food court should open
at least one branch of a junk food restaurant in the
21

campus for the students who prefers junk food over

healthy, so they all the managed by whatever they like
eat, and thats not just the recommendation of this
report, its also the recommended by most of the
Polytechnics students. Plus, we recommend the
Polytechnic restaurants to use the self-service way in
their restaurants, because students prefer to have some
control when they eat in a restaurant, and they want to
eat small or huge quantity of the food, so when the
students will have self-service, it will be easy for them to
choose whatever they want to eat and how much they
want. In closing, we also suggest that the Polytechnic
restaurants in general and the food court in specific to
serve more healthy food and to add more healthy meals
to their menu. However, they should also open a specific
restaurant for the junk food, so the students who prefer
the junk food can also eat whatever they want. Moreover,
the restaurant should have fresh food whether its
healthy of junk.

Reflection
Nayef Hamad
In this report, I have made the questionnaire on my
Google Drive and us as a group have made the questions
and have sent it to about 40 students, and worked mostly
on the Methodology such as typing the comments under
the graphs and pie charts as well as posting them from
the results of the Questionnaire alongside my group as
well as have worked on the introduction by finding the
definition of Junk food and Healthy food. I have also
24

created the Excel worksheets where we could calculate

the Mean, Mode, Median, and the Standard Deviation, as
well as the P value to determine if our hypotheses for 2 of
our questions are right or not and the Descriptive
Statistics and my group mates have helped me with
fulfilling that.
Ali Abdulla
In this report, I have written the Recommendation part
and then it was reviewed by the group and we corrected
what we thought that should be changed. I have also
worked with my group by sending our survey to about 40
students. At the end, I also wrote the references in APA
form. I have also helped the group in writing the
Methodology by helping in Excel. I also assisted the group
with finding a hypothesis for the report.
Mariam Bukhsh
In this report, Ive done research about the healthy and
junk food; also I have searched about their effects on
humans health. Moreover, Ive referenced the links from
which I took the information from. I have also written the
introduction which talks generally about the report, about
25

our aim and what we had included in the report. Also, I

have created the pie charts in Excel sheet which explains
the results of our survey. I have also helped my group
mates to write the Methodology and write the description
of the results.
