Timing: This lesson will span over one hour; it will be used as the
introduction lesson for a lesson sequence on Roman numerals.
Curriculum Outcomes:
MATHS:

Tell time to the minute and investigate the relationship between units of time (ACMMG062)
Recognise, model, represent and order numbers to at least 10 000 (ACMNA052)

HISTORY: Use historical terms (ACHHS082)


Student background: Students have been learning about Roman
numerals over the past two maths lessons.
Lesson objectives: Students will use their knowledge Roman numerals
to complete a small test that will check for understanding. This test will be
used for assessment purposes.

CONTENTS
Task Introduction: Telling the Time using Roman
Numerals
AIM: To do an overview of what has been taught
over the last two lessons

Refresh the students on what they learnt in their


previous (put the table up on to the whiteboard
again, as this may help them).
Get them to sit down on the floor in front of a
smart board.
Play the game on the smartboard: it gets the
students to read the digits in order from lowest
to highest.
Get the students to sit down at their desks and
let them know that they are going to have a
quick maths test about Roman numerals

Task development:
AIM: Give the test and get them to answer the
questions independently and quietly

Give the students the test (attached to lesson


plan) and tell them to independently answer the
questions
Ensure that they are quiet during this time
If any of the students finish their work early, tell
them to go onto the computer and quietly play

AIM: Collect the tests

Let them talk quietly amongst one another until
the bell goes.
