Polio Vaccines

Salk Vaccine
- inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV)
- developed in 1952
- 6070% effective against PV1 (poliovirus type 1)
- 90% effective against PV2 and PV3
- enhanced-potency IPV was licensed in the United States in
November 1987 and is now vaccine of choice
Oral Vaccine
- Attenuated vaccine
- Developed by several groups
- Contains small traces of antibiotics
- CONCERN: able to revert to a form that can achieve neurological
infection and cause paralysis
