Mishimamayhavewantedhiswifetocommitsuicidewithhim,thusbywritingpatriotism,
Reikodiesalongsideherhusband.
SeppukuisatimehonoredtraditionalformofsuicideamongthesamuraiclassinJapanfor
centuries.Itstillseemstocontinueeveninthetwentiethcentury.Itwastraditionallyabadgeof
courageandanhonorreservedforthesamuraiormilitaryaristocracy.DuringWorldWarII,
countlessnumbersofJapanesemilitaryofficerscommittedseppukubeforetheeyesofstunned
Americanfightingmen.Afterthewarin1945,manymenandwomen,whowerebothmilitary
andcivilian,committedseppukuasanapologytotheEmperorforhavinglostthewar.
RELATETOPATRIOTISM:
ThefactthatYukioMishimacommittedsuicidebyseppukushowsthatthestorymaybea
romanticizedversionofhowhewantedtodiehimself.Hecommittedacoupd'etatsothathe
couldtryandoverthrowthecurrentstyleofarmyinJapanwithhissquadof100men.Hedidnt
agreewiththecurrentstyleofpoliticsandthewesternizationofJapaneseculture.Some
speculatethathiscoupwasanexcusetocommitseppukutosendamessagetocurrentJapanese
politicstoreturntotradition.
Heappearedtohopethatthisactwouldpublicizehisviewson,andperhapsleadtoamilitary
uprisingindefenceof,Japan'straditionalheritagelaterspeculationastowhatothermotives
mightbeinvolvedprobablyderivesfromassumptionsaboutthepathologicalsubjectmatterof
someofhisnovels.Mishimaalsowroteanumberofplays,bothonmodernsubjectsandon
themesfromtheclassicalndrama.
