4th 5th Shooting (Field Hockey)

Objective: To review and practice shooting skills in field hockey


4th Grade Skill Session:
1) Review concepts of shooting (aim for corners, shoot hard so goalie has
less time to react, etc.)
2) Break into three groups, everyone has their own ball and a score card for
the group, they will spend 3-4 minutes at each station
3) Shooting stations on 1 court; set up a cone about 10 yards from each
goal or target
a. Shoot at a field hockey goal from the cone; after everyone on your
team goes, collect the balls and repeat till time to rotate; return to
cone each time; 1 point/goal
b. Shoot at a rebound board from the cone; 2 pts/hit
c. Shoot at a FH goal with a rebound board in the middle; 3 pts for
scoring between the board and the goal post
4) Add up points to determine the winners.
5) 4th Grade emphasis on accuracy

5th Grade Skill Session:

Review concepts of shooting (accuracy and power, corners of goal)


Review form for push shots and sweeps (practice with a partner)
Two groups at midcourt (facing opposite directions)
Group 1: one at a time; take a few dribbles and shoot with power at the goal

using a hard push shot (set up rebounding board to emphasize corners)


5) Group 2: in twos, 1 dribbles down on the right and passes across to 2 in
front of goal; 2 sweeps in the shot from the left goal post
6) divide time in half and repeat turns at one end until time to rotate to other
end of court
7) 5th Grade emphasis on power
