Mealworm Observation
Grade 2
Student Understanding:
Students will be able to observe the beetle structures.
Students will be able to determine the differences of the structures.
Students will be able to draw beetle body parts and label them.
Students will be able to make word bank entries.
Essential Questions:
Why is it important to study science?
Why have the mealworms changed over time?
Why study about living creatures, such as beetles?
Resources/Materials:
Classroom
Tub of Mealworms
Potato, sweet potato, carrot, or apple (small cubes for student containers and large
cubes for class container)
Paper plates (1 per student)
Hand lenses (1 per student)
Spoons
Activities:

Have students pick up vials of mealworms with plates. (3 minutes)


Have students observe mealworms. (10 minutes)
Have students write and draw in their Observation Journals. (20 minutes)
Have students label their drawings. (5 minutes)
Display words for Word Bank.
Make a word bank for each label. (10 minutes)

Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic
to produce a report; record science observations).

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.6

Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation in order to provide requested
detail or clarification.

Assessments:
Teacher observation of accuracy
Check each Journal to make sure Word Bank is complete.
