Rules & Guidelines

1. The competition is open to students registered in the Lower Secondary


(Years 7 & 8) for the academic year of 2010.

2. Each school will field a maximum of 2 participants, of which ONE


PARTICIPANT must be a yellow I.C. holder.

3. Students should be dressed in full school uniform.

4. There will be only one round and the participants will be judged individually.

5. Each speech has to be 3 minutes in length on a topic drawn.

6. Five marks will be deducted from overall achievement if a speaker speaks for
less than two and a half minutes or more than three and a half minutes.

7. Speakers are required to use their discretion in avoiding sensitive political or


religious issues.

8. The speech should reflect the personality of the speaker and enable him/her to
make good connection with the audience.

9. The adjudicators will take into account the usual public speaking skills:
stance, delivery, clarity and the construction of the speech.

10. Speeches should be informative and persuasive. Humour is always


appreciated but it should not be the main thrust of the speech.

11. Plagiarism will lead to disqualification. However, work extracted from other
sources should be acknowledged in the speech itself.

12. No visual aids are allowed. Speech notes should be on cards and not on
sheets of paper or notebooks.

13. The respective schools are responsible for arranging transportation to the
competition.
