Logical Leaps Assignment #1

The best science fiction works take our scientific knowledge to the brink of reality and then
make a tiny, but believable jump into the unknown. For example, several sci-fi works (like Star
Trek and Harry Potter) use the concept of invisibility cloaks/devices. Scientists actually have
made progress in cloaking devices, just not to the degree you see them in the movies. So, the
creators took a somewhat plausible technology and amplified for creative purposes. That is
your goal with the science in your story, and I will refer to this as a logical leap.
Use this graphic organizer to begin researching the science behind your science fiction. Please
make a copy titled, Last Name, First Name Logical Leaps

My idea for how science fits into my story is

Extraterrestrial life existing in outer space. The possibility of life existing and coming to Earth.

The scientific vocabulary words and processes that are

connected to my idea are...
Name

Definition of Word/Description of Process

Extraterrestrial

coming from or existing outside the planet Earth

Drake Equation

The Drake equation is a probabilistic argument used to

estimate the number of active, communicative extraterrestrial
civilizations in the Milky Way galaxy.

Fermi Paradox

The Fermi paradox (or Fermi's paradox) is the apparent

contradiction between high estimates of the probability of the
existence of extraterrestrial civilization and humanity's lack of
contact with, or evidence for, such civilizations.

Entity

something that has a real existence; thing:

Catalysts

a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction

without itself undergoing any permanent chemical change.

Diatom

Diatoms are a major group of algae, and are among the most

common types of phytoplankton. Most diatoms are unicellular,

although they can exist as colonies in the shape of filaments
or ribbons, fans, zigzags, or stars

Real Science vs. Logical Leap:

Real Science

Logical Leap that I am taking

Scientists have found single celledorganisms living in space but no multicelled organisms.

Multi-celled organisms that are more advanced

than us.

It is impossible for any object to surpass

the speed of light.

Aliens found a way to travel faster than the

speed of light and that is how they arrived to the
Milky Way Galaxy.

We have X-Ray cameras that can see

through objects, and even clothes.

The aliens have X-Ray vision that lets them see

through objects.

Building spaceships is very difficult to do

and costs tons of money and calculations.

Aliens arrived in giant spaceship to invade and

conquer the Earth.

Issues that I am having incorporating the science into my

story are/might be...
Incorporating alien genealogy into my story. I have concepts but I
dont know how to incorporate them in a way that an audience can
understand.
