Table 1: Example grades

What is their percentage on HW1 scores? Well we average their percentages over the four HW1
scores:
75% + 71.4% + 83.3% + 66.7%
= 74.1%
4
What is their percentage on HW2 scores? Well we average their percentages over the four HW2
scores:
55.6% + 63.4% + 66.7% + 42.9%
= 57.1%
4
Homework 1 counts for a total of 20% of the grade (5% for each HW1). Homework 2 counts for a
total of 40% of the grade (10% for each HW2). Therefore, with just the homeworks, the student
has the grades (note the maximum is 60%):
0.2 74.1% + 0.4 57.1% = 37.7%
In order to get a certificate, the student needs 60% total score after the final exam. The final
exam is worth 40% of the grade. How well does the student need to do on the final exam to get a
certificate? Well they need 60% 37.7% = 20.3% more total grade. This means that they need to
get the following percentage on the final exam:
Percent needed on final exam to get certificate: =

67.7% 37.7%
= 55.8%
0.4

In other words, the student needs to get a bit more than half of the final exam correct to get a
certificate. Since the final exam will contain more qualitative questions than quantitative ones,
based on the students current homework grades it is likely they will achieve the certificate.
