    An oil-based synthetic hydrocarbon drilling fluid is described that is non-toxic and readily biodegradable. The drilling fluid is composed of oligomerized olefins that are the reaction products of C10 to C24 alpha olefins. When used as a drilling fluid, it forms a low-toxicity filter cake on walls of a borehole and can be readily removed after use through natural degradation.
