DEFINITION
Pratt A feature is a region of interest on the surface of a
part.
Brown A feature is any perceived geometric or functional
element or property of an object useful in understanding the
function, behavior or performance of that object
Henderson Features are defined as geometric and
topological patterns of interest in a part model and which
represent high level entities useful in part analysis.

CLASSIFICATIONS
Functional features
To specify the operation of the feature without the constraints associated
with its topological and geometrical information.
Ex: Pivot

Design features
The design feature express the features in geometric term, but makes the
function of the feature implicit.
Ex: Shaft and Hole

Manufacturing feature
Again it implicitly incorporates the function of the feature, and in
addition also implies its geometry, but now the method for its production
is expressed explicitly.
Ex: A turned cylinder, Milled slot.
