Science Subject Guidance

Expectations:
Minimum of 2 taught lessons of science each week (3 in Upper KS2 where the
curriculum allows)
Pupils will cover 6 topics in each year group
Each topic will be assessed
Pupils should be engaging in at least 1 written investigation for each taught topic of
work.
Pupils should take part in one science day in each year group.
Assessment: Teacher and Pupil
1. I CAN Statements:

There is one sheet per topic

The sheet needs to be stuck in science books when you begin each new topic.
Pupils can tick what they already know at the beginning of the topic
As the topic is taught pupils can tick off/colour in statements at the end of each lesson,
if the objective is met.

2. Science APP Level Sheets

These are not compulsory, but can be used by teachers for pupils to be more aware of
their attainment in investigations.
They can be stuck in or placed in a pocket at the back of the Science books
Can be used when you have an investigative lesson
Children can be involved in knowing what targets they need to work on,
ticking/colouring in/sticking a sticker in their record of targets met.

Assesssment: Formal Rising Star Assessments:

Test at the end of each topic. The results are recorded as levels on Class.
Please use the amended level sheets to adjust levels.

Marking:
Marking should seek to:
1.

Praise good science skills, knowledge or understanding

2. Involve science related target setting and correct unclear understanding of science
concepts.
3. Pick up on incorrectly spelt science vocabulary
