Learning Intentions
By the end of this lesson, students will have had the opportunity to demonstrate their
ability to:
Use grouping to complete division problems
Use shared grouping using concrete materials.

MAB blocks/ counters
Photocopy of year 2 page
Lesson Procedure:
1. Remind students of sharing objects evenly to people
2. Do a class example of sharing with MAB I have 20 MAB blocks and need to share
them amongst 4 people. One for you, you, you, you, you, two for you, you.
3. Explain the process of one each until they are gone
4. Repeat with counters
5. Explain to students that when we divide or share into groups, we want to give each
people an equal share
6. Inform students of behaviour expectation for MAB
7. Hand out MAB blocks/ counters to each student
8. AS CLASS
9. Have each student select 10 counters/MAB
10. Ask them to divide/share these into 5 groups.
11. Model the strategy of going one to the next
12. INDEPENDENT
13. Have students select 12 objects and divide them into 4 equal groups. Ask how many
are in each group
14. Have students select 15 objects and divide them into 3 equal groups. Ask how many
are in each group
15. Have students select 8 objects and divide them into 2 equal groups. Ask how many are
in each group
16. Explain we first see how many objects we start with, then place one by one into each
group.
17. Send 2s to complete page 55 of textbook.
18. Explain to year three that there are many ways to write a division problem
19. Have students select 18 manipulatives
20. Ask them to group them into six even groups remind of the one by one strategy
21. Ask how many are in each group
22. Write the sum on the board but have students come answer it.

25. Ask them to group them into three even groups
26. Ask how many are in each group

Differentiation of learners:
To cater for students with needing additional support, the following strategies have been put
in utilised:
Have students who struggle work with confident students
Read question to students with literacy struggles
Assessment & Evaluation of Learning:
Students were able to identify and solve division problems

Mark students work and complete the assessment profile for each student
