ADAPTATIONS
The student that is visually impaired will be seated in the front of the classroom and will be
provided with all documents with enlarged print.
The student who is an English language learner will be placed in a group with proficient
speakers who will be there as support during the lesson.
The hearing impaired student will be equipped with a FM unit so audio information is
transmitted directly from teacher to receiver in hearing aide. BrainPop video presentation is
played with close captions.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION
The teacher realizes that not all students learn the same way.
Visual learners will be stimulated by the BrainPOP video presentation on the SMARTBOARD,
as well as having a print copy of the story in hand.
Auditory students will listen to the BrainPOP video, as well as the reading of If You Give a
Moose a Muffin, and listen to group members.
Social Interaction learners will be engaged by the social interaction of working in groups.
Tiered Differentiation
Tier One Learners will be provided with a T-chart with pictures. The student must draw a
line to the matching cause and effect picture.
Tier Two Learners will be provided with a T-chart with either the cause or the effect listed
for each example. The student must match the missing cause or effect to complete the T
chart.
Tier Three Learners will be given a blank T-chart with sentence strips. They will
complete T chart unassisted.
DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
1. The teacher will show a Cause and Effect video on BrainPOP (What is a cause? What is
an effect? Which happens first? What were some examples shown in the video?)
2. The teacher will introduce the book, If You Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff.
Students will be reminded what cause and effect is, and will be instructed to find
examples in the story as we read.
3. The students will take turns reading If You Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff
aloud. Questions will be asked periodically as the story is read. (What was the cause?
How do you know the difference between the cause and the effect? )
4. The teacher will introduce a T chart to the class. (What is a T-chart? What is the
purpose? What do you need in order to complete the T-chart?)
5. The students will work in small groups to complete a T-chart using the cause and effects
that happened throughout the book, If You Give a Moose a Muffin by Laura Numeroff.
Students will have a photocopy of the book to use as a reference. (What was the first
cause that happened in the book? What was the effect? How do you know this?

ASSESSMENT
The teacher will observe the students working in their groups.
The teacher will review the T-chart that is completed by the students.
3

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Students will be asked to reflect on their day, write and illustrate a cause and effect that they
experienced.
FOLLOW-UP: DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND ACADEMIC
ENRICHMENT
Direct Teacher Intervention: Students who did not easily meet the lesson objective will, along
with the teacher or teachers assistant, be provided additional material to review on cause and
effects.
