IMPROVING WRITING SKILLS: GUIDED WRITING

Upon checking students essay on How to Quit Smoking I found that about 85%
scored less than 15 for contents and language. About 3% did not write at all. Both
components make up 35 marks. Students of 4 C are of weak proficiency. Obviously they
have problems in:

writing up elaborations.
For example:

Set the date
Students sentence
Make the decision to quit and set the date.
Set the date at 23 February 2015.
When asked what is the problem in writing students generally responded , We do not
know how to write. Some claimed We cant write. We dont want to write because
we dont know what to write. Why did this happen? I keep on asking myself what is the
best solution that can be applied during the teaching and learning in order to improve my
students writing. They must be able to write especially for guided writing as the
language band will determine the band for continuous writing. I do not want them to be
frustrated by the practice and go great lengths to avoid it.
I have been teaching English for 13 years and there is no perfect solution to this problem;
however, I do believe every question has an answer. Perhaps I need to apply a formula as
a strategy that will help the students to construct sentences based on the content points
given in guided writing (giving advice or suggestions)
I feel there is an urgency to bring this matter up during panel discussion. The
implementation should be carried out properly to ensure effective teaching and learning
of writing. The formula that Im going to use is:

Tinjauan Masalah
The study is to take place in a school where the teacher is teaching. English is a
foreign language for the vast majority of the students in the class and they are not , on the
whole, fluent and confident English speakers and writers. The teacher is to play the role
of teacher-researcher. Students writing scripts demonstrated students difficulties in
constructing sentences from the content points given. In addition to that , the students
also have problems in writing up proper elaborations. The writing formula is hoped will
enable the students to write. Modul ini dicadangkan sebagai alternatif kepada kaedah
sebelumnya.

Aktiviti berikutnya akan dijalankan dalam 8 kumpulan pelajar dan dilakukan
secara pembelajaran koperatif . Pelajar akan dikumpulkan berdasarkan pencapaian ujian
topical.

Bagi aktiviti ini setiap kumpulan akan diberikan sekeping kad yang ditulis
soalan dan diminta berbincang dan menjawabnya dalam masa 5 minit.
Selepas itu, salah seorang ahli kumpulan akan diundi untuk menerangkan
penyelesaian yang mereka lakukan. Setiap kumpulan yang betul akan
diberi 10 mata.
Kaedah 8.3.1 akan diulang sebanyak 5 hingga 8 kali ( 8 soalan ). Soalan
adalah soalan yang bercampur operasinya.
Hadiah diberikan untuk kumpulan yang menang. Saguhati untuk yang
lain-lain.
Selepas semua aktiviti di atas dilaksanakan ( selepas 7 waktu ), waktu ke-8
digunakan untuk melaksanakan Post Test.
Kajian semula untuk gelung kedua.
