Chief Joseph
I, Chief Joseph would like to talk to my people. I dont want you to here this from anyone
else. We will surrender to the white people. We have lost too many people to keep going. You are
my family and I cant lose my family anymore. We have kept our land and made it our home but
this is a battle we can not and will not win. I am tired and my heart is tired. I can not look around
and see all of my people dead. That is how the future looks. They have more people than us,
more weapons than us and more fight then us. We are a peaceful tribe and I do not want them to
take that away from us. Our ancestors are buried on this land and I hope when they build here
they understand the past people that have lived her for centuries. They may take our land but
they can never take our spirits. I would rather be alive without our land than be dead and I hope
you would too. Im sorry but this is the way it has to be.
