Q1: In the beginning of Chapter 4 Cheryl is looking to hitchhike a ride even though she knows it
isnt safe. Where is she trying to get to? Who offers her a ride to her destination, where are they
from. Would you offer someone a ride even though you didnt know the person.
Q1 response: Cheryl was hitchhiking because she did not want to walk twelve miles to the start
of the PCT so she goes to the gas station to look for a ride. An old man and a young man offer
her a ride, they are from Minnesota and they are on their way to his graduation. It would depend
on who the person is and where they are headed.
Q2: Cheryl goes to portland to escape her problems and stay with her friend Lisa. Who does
Cheryl meet in Portland? How does this person influence Cheryl and how does Cheryl feel
about it?
Q2 response: While Cheryl is in Portland she meets a man named Joe, she then moves in with
Joe. While she is living with Joe he offers her heroin, and at first Cheryl is surprised and talks
about how she has never done drugs before and Joe tells her that it will help her get away from
her problems. Once he tells her this she decides to take it and then describes how she would do
it more and more a week, then she tells her friend Lisa and Lisa tries to make her realize how
bad it is but Cheryl is caught up with how good the heroin makes her feel and she tells herself
that she can stop when ever she wants.
Q3: When Cheryl and John got divorced she changed her last name to Strayed. Was changing
her name her idea or was it influenced by someone else? By changing her last name do you
think it was her way of coping with it? If so why?
