Wild Questions and Responses part 3
Q1: Cheryl is at Kennedy Meadows also known as the gateway to High Sierra. Why did Cheryl
stop and tell Doug and Tom to go on ahead without her? After they left how did Cheryl feel and
what happens to Cheryl?
Response to Q1: While Cheryl was at Kennedy Meadows with Doug and Tom she stopped
because she needed to get something from her pack. After they leave she says, Their leaving
made me melancholy, though I also felt something like relief when they disappeared into the
dark trees.( Strayed, 119). Cheryl felt sad but also a sense of relief, nothing much happens to
her she describes how she wants to be alone and how she gets this new idea of loneliness.
Q2: Cheryl is on day 1 of her third week, she finally caught up to Tom and Doug and ate dinner.
The next day what does Cheryl encounter? And how does it alter her decisions on hiking the
rest of the Sierra Mountain? If you were in her situation would you have the same reaction as
Cheryl?
Response to Q2: The next day while Cheryl was hiking alone she tells us that she came to a
wide swath of snow on a steep hill. She then has to take out her ice axe and tried to use the
ones that Doug and Tom had already made but they were very uncomfortable and felt slippery.
Eventually she makes her way across and realizes that she needs to bypass the snow at Trail
Pass, because it will get even worse at Forester Pass, the highest point on the PCT. If I were in
her situation I would have the same reaction I would be scared to keep hiking the Sierra
Mountain but I would continue onward with it because its a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Q3: Cheryl Is set with the idea to get off the trail at, Trail Pass and Doug and Tom are set with
the idea to keep hiking the Sierra Mountain. What part does she decide to hike though instead.
Based on the route Cheryl decides to go will Doug and Tom join Cheryl? If you were hiking with
a friend would you listen to their reason for choosing a different route and go with them or would
you leave them?
