Mexico
Hugo Medeiros

Las Posadas
From December 16th to the 24th, there are a series of parties called the Posadas.
Most often performed in lower class neighborhoods.
For children, its the most anticipated event.
Used to bring the community together.

Las Posadas (cont.)

Some Traditions Include:

Telling the story of Mary and Joseph (story of Christmas).

Bible readings at parties and get togethers.
Pinata breaking.
Christmas carols (Mary and Joseph).
o Asking for shelter

There are 9 nights for las Posadas to represent the 9

months that Jesus spent in Marys womb and also the 9
day journey to Bethlehem.

La Misa De Gallo
On the last Posada (Christmas Eve), there is a midnight mass following with a midnight feast.
Basically an end of Christmas season celebration.
Things done during celebration:
o Fireworks (A lot)
o Torches
o Sparklers
o Plays
o Eating a lot of food
o Dancing

Christmas day is very quiet because families are recovering from the festival from the day
before.

Los Santos Inocentes

Still in the Christmas season:
The day of Los Santos Inocentes is basically Mexicos version of April fools.
o This day was originally for the commemoration of those boys who were killed
by King Herod.
o Now, its just a day to prank others.
o On this day, it is said that if someone gullible lets you borrow something, you
can send them a letter saying this is not the day to let others borrow things,
therefore I will keep _____ and you keep whatever was given to you. This
was only tolerated in the 19th Century.

Thank You
And remember, if you borrow something and
dont give it back Thats stealing.
