Sky v BBC

(Public Broadcasting Company v Private

Broadcasting Company)
BBC is a public broadcasting company funded by the
government. Sky is a private broadcasting company funded by
private investors. They are two of the most popular

broadcasting companies today and

each others biggest rivals.

Ownership Model and History:

The BBC is the largest broadcasting organisation in the world.
No other broadcaster in the world has such a diverse, exciting
and long history. The 1920s saw the end of amateur radio
enthusiasts, and the beginning of a professional broadcast
organisation. The BBC was established by Royal Charter as the
British broadcasting corporation. The Charter defined the BBCs
objectives, powers and obligations. They brought in the
television license fee to help fund the organisation. A factory in
Chelmsford in 1920 gave birth to Britains first ever live public
broadcast, then still a private company. With a strike disrupting
the distribution of newspapers, the BBC was placed in a
delicate situation. It was possible for the government to
commandeer the company but an agreement was made so that
the BBC was free to pursue the governments objectives in any
way they chose.

company on the london stock exchange. In 2010 it became
available in ten million homes and is available in 36% of
households in the uk and Ireland. It also licenses some of its
channels to cable operators such as Virgin Media. BSkyB is a
commercial ownership which means they are a private
company selling products for a company, generates profits for
owners and stakeholders, owners and stakeholders determine
tastes. In 1989 Rupert Murdoch relaunched the sky channel as
a four channel UK based network on astra satelites. British Sky
Broadcasting was formed by the equal merger of sky television
and British satellite broadcasting in 1990.

The Hacking Scandal:

This is an on going controversy involving The News of the World
and many other tabloid papers. The employees of the news of
the world were accused of being part of the phone hacking
scandal. It was concluded that the news of the world and its
employees hacked celebrities, politicians and the british royal
families phones. Huge controversy errupted when it was
revealed that in 2011 when school girl Milly Dowler and
relatives of british soldiers killed were all hacked also. This has
impacted how people view everything Rupert Murdoch has
been involved in and has gained trust issues with the
customers especially since they have telephone deals
available.
The BBCs Biased Views?
Recently with the Scottish referendum being held, the BBC has
came under some spotlight and has been noticed for being a
rather major biased broadcast company. With the conservatives
or commonly known as the tories, exploiting the media in their
favour for political reasons. Reports have came out that some
complaints have been made about the BBC being sexist as well.

Income Generation:
The BBC is a government funded company. They get a majority
of their funding by the television license fee and this amounts
to over 3 billion. This is essentially a tax which is charged to all
british households, companies, and organisations using any
type of equipment to receive or record live television
broadcasts. Just like all other taxes you can be prosecuted for
any non payment. BBCs commercial business contribute just
over a billion pounds, 244.6 million from government grants,
and 72.1 million from other income such as rent collections and
royalties from over seas programming
