Student
Council
Q&A
By Keturah Lynch
STAFF WRITER

In December, the Student Council made

cards for the people who come to
Ms.Foleys soup kitchen.
I interviewed a group of third- and firstgraders: Alex Smith in Ms. Keberts class,
Michael in Ms. Watsons class, Nehemiah
in Ms. Selbys class and Mila in Ms.
Lenhers class.
Keturah: So, what are you guys doing?
Michael Peterson: We are making cards.
Keturah: For who?
Nehemiah: Homeless people.
Keturah: What kind of cards are you
making?
Michael: Funny card.
Alex Smith: I dont know, just any card.
Nehemiah: Christmas card.
Keturah: Are you enjoying?
Nehemiah: Yes.
It looks like theyre having fun. Now,
lets go a little deeper into their Student

Fun Run
raised
money for
great cause

A publication of irwin Academic Center Newspaper Club

Irwin Academic Center got together to raise money for charity with a campus Fun Run.

By Morgan
STAFF WRITER

We had an amazing fun run. I

thought that it was great, but before
I go into my opinion let me tell you
what some of our students and staff
had to say about this event.
I thought the kids loved it, they
looked like they were having a good
time, said Mr. Hiroshege, a member
of the third grade team.

I thought it was awesome that the

kids participated said Ms.Traci, a
teachers assistant in third grade.
We also spoke with Zion Booker,
who ran the most laps in the fourth
grade.
I thought it was an awesome accomplishment and that I inspired
other pupils in the school, he said.
Thats what they had to say, so now
for my turn of events.

I did think the way they collected

money was efficient. A PTA member
came to my room every day reminding our class about the fun run
money. I am in Ms. Padgetts class
and we were one of the top classes.
I dont mean to be rude but they
could have amped up the ice cream
party a bit considering we ran 1,056
laps. But other than that it was a wonderful event.

Ask Molly: Theres not enough bonding time with brother

Please see Q&A on Page 3

By Molly

STAFF WRITER

Dear IAC, I miss my brother. He is middle school. But I dont get to see him
much
Anonymous

I get it. My brother is in middle school,

too. If you want to see your brother
more, you could talk to him or your parents.
You could set up times for family. Dur-

ing this time you could watch a favorite

TV show (My family watches The Amazing
Race) or play board games.
Remember, dont take it personally that
your brother has a shortage of time. He
has homework and other things going on,
too. Just try to set up family time or just
talk to your brother more often, Try to
connect with him - Molly
Can we have pizza every day?
Anonymous

Well, I dont think the school grownups would go for that, but they might go
for broccoli, what do you think? :)
I am having trouble in recess and learning, Can you help me?
Anonymous

In many grades, people think that recess is the perfect time to pick on people
and start drama, If you have an idea of
who is mainly starting the drama, you

could try to stay away from them. If not

find a group of solid friends that can
help you if times get tough.
A lot of people have trouble learning.
With me, I get words, but numbers just
sink in my head. The way I deal with this
is by turning all of the math problems
into a story in my head. That way I can
understand it. Sometimes people just
dont understand what they are being
taught.

If you want, you can always ask your parents to request a

tutor or just talk to your teacher and see ifthere are any
books, websites, or worksheets that can help you.
I am getting bullied.
Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,
If you are getting bullied.....
As long as you arent feeling unsafe, you can try to work it
out, but remember, sometimes people wont be willing to
change their actions. And if you are ever feeling unsafe, go to
a teacherimmediately.
Here are some tips for ignoring a bully
Just walk away when the bully approaches, This way the
bully knows that they can t under your skin and cant hurt
you
Concentrate on something else, like what you are doing
this weekend
Have a saying that will build your confidence. You can say
this to yourself when the bully is being mean
And remember: Dont be mean back. If you do that you are
as bad as they are.

Advice on making
some new friends

By Lauren, Alyssa and Morgan Lee

STAFF WRITERS

For Lauren
Q: Im having trouble making friends
what should I do
Desperate 4 Friends
A: well desperate 4 friends you should
find things that you and other people
and you both are in interested in if that
doesnt work then just stick with the
friends you have.
Q:Im having trouble with my mom.
What should I do?
Mommy Trouble8990
A: well mommy trouble you should
talk to your mom if that doesnt work go
and see if you can g t a counseler sorta
like Ms. Mapp.

For Alyssa
Q: My class is talking a lot and I dont
know what to do about it. I have tried to
tell them to be quiet But they wont stop
talking. What can I do about it?
TickTockTalk
A: Tell them that it is bothering you. I
am sure they will understand and help

THE IRWIN OWL

you make your class better. If they dont

stop, I think you should get your teacher
involved. It might be a good idea to set up
a program to keep your class quiet.
Q: I am having trouble getting my homework done. What should I do to get in the
habit of getting my homework done
quicker?
Homeworkhelp101
A: Maybe work out solutions with a parent or teacher so you can get your homework done very easily. Maybe spend less
time on after school activities and more on
your homework. I hope these tips have
helped you!
For Morgan Lee
Q: I like this boy but he does not even
notice me, what should I do?
Anonymous
A: I think you should not be concerned
with these things anyway. You should
enjoy being a kid and just enjoy being
young. You are a kid, but you wont be forever. And that goes for anyone, dont grow
up too fast, just take some time to stop
and smell the roses.

Learning to jump rope

with Double Dutch style
By Maeli Zhiss
STAFF WRITER

I interviewed Kendal Clement, a fourthgrader in Miss Surretts class about why

she likes Double Dutch.
She said likes it because it teaches her
how do Double Dutch. Its a lot like jump
rope except for you dont spin the rope

other people do.

And shes right. It is a learning experience for everyone! Soon they will be
moving on to two ropes but to be sure all
of them know how to jump in and out of
the rope, an important thing in double
Dutch.

A girl on the Run is so much fun.

This after school activity is held every
Tuesday and Thursday at 4:30-5:30 p.m.
The participants will learn how to help
them in life-based situations, while running at the same time.
At the very end of the season the girls

will run a 5k (3.1 miles) to show their

growth.
If you like running and collaborating
with other girls this activity is for you!
Now it is time to hear what other students
had to say about this amazing after

Ask the editor: Q&A with The Charlotte Posts Herbert White

ASHLEY MAHONEY/THE CHARLOTTE POST

Herbert White, editor of The Charlotte Post newspaper, talks with members of Irwin Academic Centers Newspaper Club about writing and publishing articles.

1.Sophia, Maeli, Peyton & Lydia (Cluster Group): What, according to you, is a
good story?
A good story always tells the reader
something he or she didnt know in a
way that is enlightening and entertaining. It should be written with facts pertaining to the subject and have details
that make it important to the reader.

2.Molly, Lauren, Alyssa, Morgan and

Sophia (Advice Box): How does The Charlotte Post add value in comparison to other
publications?
The Post covers articles that other publications cant or wont report on in addition to subjects all readers care about. We
try to report on people, places and events
that may not be obvious to everyone but

add value to the community.

3.Camille and Keturah (Afterschool
Programs): What stories make a newspaper interesting?
An interesting story can be on anything written in a way that is informative
and colorful. You want to write in a way
that is exciting to the reader.
4.Dhyey, Camille and Jordan (Inter-

view Team): What part of being a journalist do you enjoy the most and what
keeps you going?
The best part is telling interesting stories and pushing myself to find them. Its
easy to report on major events, but I
have the most fun talking to and writing
about ordinary people who do great
things in their neighborhood.
