    Sid Sullivan, a candidate for Mayor of Columbia, declined an invitation for an endorsement interview with the Tribune Publishing Company. In previous interviews for other political offices, the publisher ignored Sullivan's candidacy after the first interview and endorsed a personal friend instead. During the second interview, the publisher boasted that he did not read any of Sullivan's submitted articles. The resulting editorial attacked Sullivan indirectly. While candidate interviews by newspapers can be important for democracy, Sullivan felt that pre-judgment and misrepresentation of the conversations were injurious to the electoral process.

    Dear Mr. Waters:

    Thank you for your invitation for a mayoral endorsement interview. However, I am declining this
    invitation.

    This is not the first time I have run for public office. I have participated in two prior candidate interviews
    with you and found them wanting. After the first interview, you ignored my candidacy in your
    endorsement of your personal friend. You have done the same with other well qualified candidates that
    were not to your liking. In the second endorsement interview you boasted of not reading any of the
    several articles I submitted to your paper. Then your editorial developed a “straw man” as a way to attack
    me.

    I support the principle of a newspaper editor interviewing all candidates. Generally speaking it is a
    worthy, important and a vital contribution to our democratic form of government. However, if there is
    pre-judgment and subsequent erroneous recounting of the conversation, they become positively injurious
    to the electoral process.
