Use Them Up
In this speaking activity, students practice using phrasal verbs with up.
Before class, make one copy of the cards for each group of three to four students. Cut the
cards and put them into two sets (topic cards and phrasal verb cards).
Procedure
Divide the class into groups of three or four.
Explain that they are going to play a game where they practice using phrasal verbs with up.
Give each group one set of topic cards and one set of phrasal verb cards.
The topic cards are placed face down in the middle of the group.
The phrasal verb cards are shuffled and three cards are dealt to each player. Students then
think about how the phrasal verbs can be used.
The first topic card is turned over. The group starts talking about the topic in general. The
goal is for each student to use the phrasal verbs on their cards in the context of that topic.
When someone uses the phrasal verb on a card appropriately, they put the card down on
the table.
The student who uses all three of their phrasal verbs first wins the round and keeps the topic
card.
The phrasal verb cards are collected, shuffled and re-dealt. Then, the next topic card is
turned over and the group plays again. Students do this until all the topic cards have been
used.
The winner of the game is the student with the most topic cards at the end.
