ORIGIN
The first European explorer to sight New Zealand
was Abel Janszoon Tasman on 13 December 1642.
Polynesians settled New Zealand in 12501300 CE
and developed a distinctive Mori culture
Because of its remoteness, it was one of the last
lands to be settled by humans

LOCATION
The country geographically comprises two main
landmasses that of the North Island, or Te Ika-aMui, and the South Island, or Te Waipounamu
and numerous smaller islands.
New Zealand is situated some 1,500 kilometres
(900 mi) east of Australia

MUSIC AND SPORTS

New Zealand music has been influenced by blues,
jazz, country, rock and roll and hip hop
Radio first arrived in New Zealand in 1922 and
television in 1960
Rugby union is considered the national sport
Golf, netball, tennis and cricket have the highest
rates of adult participation, while football (soccer)
is top among young people

ARTS AND LITERATURE

As part of the resurgence of Mori culture, the
traditional crafts of carving and weaving are now
more widely practiced and Mori artists are
increasing in number and influence
Mori quickly adopted writing as a means of
sharing ideas, and many of their oral stories and
poems were converted to the written form
Participation in the world wars gave some New
Zealand writers a new perspective on New Zealand
culture and with the post-war expansion of
universities local literature flourished

ECONOMY
New Zealand has a modern, prosperous and
developed market economy
The currency is the New Zealand dollar, informally
known as the "Kiwi dollar"; it also circulates in the
Cook Islands

ECONOMY
New Zealand is heavily dependent on international
trade, particularly in agricultural products
In 2008,oil,gas,and coal generated about 69
percent of New Zealand's gross energy supply
while 31% was generated from renewable energy,
primarily hydroelectric power and geothermal power
Wool was New Zealands major agricultural export
during the late 19th century
