KAEA1151 ASSIGNMENT 2 (SEM2 20142015)

1)

Describe at least three fluid properties

2)

What is Pascal Law?

3)

A 50cm x 30cm x 20cm block weighing 150N is to be moved at a constant velocity of

0.8m/s on an inclined surface with a friction coefficient of 0.27. (a) determine the force F
that needs to be applied in the horizontal directions. (b) if a 0.4mm thick oil film with a
dynamic viscosity of 0.012pa is applied between the block and inclined surface, determine
the percent reduction in the required force. (remember that friction force = friction
coefficient x force in vertical direction)

4)

Define gauge pressure, atmospheric pressure, absolute pressure, barometer, manometer

and head of water

5)

Vessels A and B shown in figure below contain water under pressure of 280,000N/m2 and
140,000N/m2 respectively. What is the deflection h of the mercury in the differential
gauge? (Apply equivalent head of water, h, for calculation. P = gh)

6)

Freshwater and seawater flowing in parallel horizontal pipelines are connected to each
other by a double U-tube manometer. Determine the pressure difference between the two
pipelines. Take the density of seawater at that location to be 1035kg/m 3 and density of
mercury to be 13600kg/m3 and density of water is 1000 kg/m3.

KAEA1151 ASSIGNMENT 2 (SEM2 20142015)

7)

Define the resultant hydrostatic force acting on a submerged surface and the center of
pressure.

8)

A long solid cylinder of radius 2m hinged at point A is used as an automatic gate, as

shown below. When the water level reaches 15m, the cylindrical gate opens by turning
about the hinge at point A. Determine the hydrostatic force on the cylinder and its line of
action when the gate opens.

9)

What is the buoyant force?

10) A 170kg granite rock (=2700 kg/m3) is dropped into a lake. A man dives in and tries to lift
the rock. Determine how much force the man needs to apply to lift it from the bottom of the
lake (density of water is 100 kg/m3).
Note: to convert unit to N = [1N / 1kg. m/s 2]
