1.

The following data refer to a mild steel specimen tested in a laboratory:

Diameter of the specimen
=
25 mm
Length of the specimen
=
300 mm
Extension under a load of 15 kN
=
0.045 mm
Load at yield point
=
127.65 kN
Maximum load
=
208.60 kN
Length of the specimen after failure
=
375 mm
Neck diameter
=
17.75 mm
Determine
a. Youngs modulus
b. Yield point
c. Ultimate stress
d. Percentage of elongation
e. Percentage reduction in area, and
f. Safe stress adopting a factor of safety of 2

2.

A steel bar is 600 mm long. The two ends are 30.5 mm and 37.75 mm diameters
respectively and each is 140 mm in length. The middle portion is of 25 mm diameter.
Determine the decrease in length of the bar when subjected to an axial compressive load
of 120 kN. Take E = 0.2 x 106 N/mm2.

3.

A member ABCD is subjected o loads as shown in figure. Find the value of P and
determine the total change in length of the bar. Take E = 210 kN/mm2.
