Different Points of View


I. PRE-INSTRUCTIONAL PLANNING
A. Common Core Standard:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.1
Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence.
B. ASCA Student Standard:
PS:A2, PS:A2.2
Respect alternative points of view
C. Objective(s):
1. Students will be able to differentiate between fact and opinion
2. Students will be able to support an opinion with three clear reasons
3. Students will be able to respect the opinions of others
D. Materials:
PowerPoint presentation, Smart Board, Writing Handout, Pencils
E. Modification/Adaptations for students with special needs and other
students as appropriate:
Students experiencing difficulty with the writing portion of the lesson will receive
assistance from either the teacher or the school counselor.
Students in need of enrichment will have the opportunity to lead the class in
discussions concerning differing opinions.

II. LESSON PRESENTATION


A. Motivator/Anticipatory Set:
Students listen attentively as the school counselor introduces todays integrated lesson on
different points of view.

B. Detailed Lesson Presentation Sequence (Teacher, School Counselor, and
Student Activities):
1. Students respond to the teachers questions as she reviews the concept of fact and
opinion.
3 minutes
2. Students answer several questions that the school counselor poses about
opinions. The teacher passes out writing handouts during this time.
5 minutes
3. Students watch a short YouTube video on the best moments from presidential
debates. Students respond to the school counselor as he poses questions about
the YouTube video.
5 minutes
4. Students listen attentively as the teacher introduces the opinionated essay writing
prompt. Students then respond to the opinionated-essay writing prompt
involving two different school calendars. Both the school counselor and the
teacher circulate and assist during this time.
10 minutes
5. Students respond as the school counselor asks what benefits a school might
experience from having a summer break. The school counselor records five
different benefits on the PowerPoint.
5 minutes
6. Students respond as the teacher asks what benefits a school might experience
from having shorter breaks spread throughout the year. The teacher records five
different benefits on the PowerPoint.
5 minutes
7. In a time of reflection, students document in their writing handout whether or
not they had any changes of opinion, and if they heard any input they had not
thought of previous to the class discussion.
5 minutes
C. Lesson Closure:
Students are listening as the school counselor and teacher conclude the lesson,
commenting on how it is important to learn from and respect the opinions of
others.
