SAFE WORK PROCEDURES

ENGINE CRANE
SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1.
Only use engine crane on even, level surface.
2.
Never move engine on crane unless it is securely attached to the lifting hook by suitable lifting equipment.

Key processes to be followed


Perform visual inspection of all components (including welds) for damage,
distortion or missing parts, bolts, nuts, etc.
Ensure that wheels and castors turn freely.
Visually inspect jack for signs of oil leakage.
Check lifting hook, slings, chains, etc. for wear, or damage.
Ensure that area where engine crane is to be used is clear of rubbish, dirt,
etc, on floor, and that floor is clean of oil spills and grease.
Prepare engine for removal, i.e., linkages, fuel lines, hoses, wiring, etc.
Position crane over engine, and lower jack until the hook is in the correct
lifting position.
Place slings around engine, and raise jack to take up slack. Adjust position
and lengths of slings if necessary to ensure that engine is properly and
evenly supported by all slings.
Remove final mounting bolts, and continue to raise engine with jack until it
is clear of bodywork, and remove engine from vehicle.
Lower engine fully when clear of vehicle before moving jack to avoid risk
of overturning.
Reverse above procedure to replace engine in vehicle.
Keep wheels, castors and pins cleaned and lightly oiled.
Keep jack free of oil and grease.
Inspect for leaks, and top up with approved oil when necessary.

Precautions / PPE required


Do not use unit if damaged
arrange for immediate repairs.
Keep wheels, etc, lubricated.
Do not use faulty jack.
Do not use faulty equipment.
Foot protection must be worn.
Eye protection should be worn.
Engine must be securely supported
on engine crane before removal of
final mounting bolts.
Ensure that slings or chains are not
caught or twisted.
