Book: Friday Night Lights

Bissinger, H. G. Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream. Reading, MA: Addison-Wesley
Pub., 1990. Print
1. The primary audience for this book are just regular readers who have an interests in sports and
specifically football. Being a football fan and also seeing the movie I would have to say that it
provides plenty entertainment for a reader that is based on a true story. It does not fit a particular
need for me because it is just a casual read.
2. This source does not pertain to my research project at all with the only similarity between the two
being sports.
3. I do not believe that there are any bias in this source because it is a book that is based off of a true
story from a Texas high school.
4. From what I get off the works cited is that this story meant a lot to this specific town and school
that was chasing a dream together to capture a football state championship.
5. This source is from 1990 so it would not be up to date, but since it is a book its relevance is the
same and the story has not changed.
6. This author does have the credentials because this is not the only sports book he has written and
grew up around the game of football.
7. The only thing that the press effects on this source is spreading the word that the book was written
and how it relates to the true story.
8. The impact that the book has made is telling the world about the adventure explained in the book
and how football teams could follow the example.
9. There will not be any impact made because it was a book that was written to read for pleasure not
research.
10. Seeing the movie and reading the book gives this source a 5 because it tells a great story and I
love any sports story.
Database: Should College Student-Athletes Be Paid?

Mitchell, Horace, and Marc Edelman. "Should College Student-Athletes Be Paid?." U.S. News
Digital Weekly 5.52 (2013): 17. Academic Search Premier. Web. 8 June 2015.

1. The primary audience for this source is anyone who has access to the internet and is interested
in this certain subject. It explains both sides of the subject to inform people of what it is all
about. This could contribute to my needs as a researcher or my paper.
2. If I choose to use this source it could contribute to my project and possibly answer the
question of should college student athletes be paid to play sports while in college.
3. I believe that there might be a little bias between the two authors because they are debating
between each other. This could lead some of their own views being put down instead of facts that
have been proven.
4. From what I can tell by the works cited is that there was two authors for this article that was
published in a newspaper. Because it was published in a newspaper it leads me to believe that
they are both local sports writers.
5. This source is up to date and with it only being two years ago I believe that it is a still very
relevant source.
6. I do believe that the writers have experience from them being sports writers and being around
it everyday.
7. With the newspaper being a part of the press I believe that on this subject the press plays a
significant role because it is constantly being covered as long as it is relevant.
8. I believe that is has opened people's eyes about the subject and probably encouraged them to
research more about it.
9. Implications that it soon could run into is that it will get out of date quickly because this
subject will change with time and with it being a newspaper article it may not have a lot of
information to it just an article to let people know.
10. I would give this article a 3 just because it was a debate between two authors rather than a
scholarly article over the subject.
Database: Should College Athletes Be Paid To Play?
COOPER, KENNETH J. "Should College Athletes Be Paid To Play?." Diverse: Issues In Higher
Education 28.10 (2011): 12-13. Academic Search Premier. Web. 8 June 2015.
1. The primary audience from this source is scholarly readers mainly in college education. It
gives the point of view from the college faculty member instead of sports writers, coaches, or
athletes. This source would fill a particular need when I do my research if I decide to use it
because of the different perspective.
2. Again with my topic being about if student athletes should be paid or not it does apply to my
research topic and it will give me insight and a different view on this discussion.

3. I do not detect or expect and bias in this article because one it is a scholarly article that is peer
reviewed, but also has facts in it instead of dialogue between two people like the previous one.
4. The one thing I can tell from the works cited is that this article came from a very scholarly
journal with this not being the only issue in higher education.
5. This source is up to date but barely so with it being written in 2011 some views that were
written in there may have changed from then to now in 2015.
6. He has many years in the newspaper and journal writing industry, but his specialty is in
politics and government so that would make me skeptical over this specific topic.
7. This certain subject will always be covered by the press as long as it is still relevant and there
is a dispute between both sides.
8. I believe that is has opened people's eyes about the subject and probably encouraged them to
research more about it.

9. With this source being close to out of date I can see implications even right now that what was
written then may not match up to what is being said now.
10. I would give this article a 4 because it is peer reviewed and was published in a higher
education journal.
Online: Players about to Get Paid as Money Changes Game in College Athletics
Dodd, Dennis. "Players about to Get Paid as Money Changes Game in College Athletics." CBS
Sports. CBSSports.com, 27 Feb. 2015. Web. 4 June 2015.
1. The primary audience for this source is anyone who has access to the internet and is interested in this
certain subject. It explains both sides of the subject to inform people of what it is all about. This could
contribute to my needs as a researcher or my paper.
2. This could be useful to me and my research project because of how recent it is.
3. With it being from a newspaper and being from a sports writer I'm not saying the whole thing is
bias, but he would probably put his own opinions in.
4. The works cited tells me that this article was published not too long ago and that there are some
arguments out there that are saying the college student athletes are about to be paid sooner than
later.
5. This source is very up to date within the last year and with this being a part of a newspaper I feel
the relevancy has a small window because there's not a lot you can write in a newspaper. It's just
something to let people know and then they can do more research on it.

6. This author has plenty of credentials and past experience to make him qualified to write about this
subject because he is a college football sports writer who has been around for a while.
7. This certain subject will always be covered by the press as long as it is still relevant and there is a
dispute between both sides.
8. I believe that is has opened people's eyes about the subject and probably encouraged them to
research more about it.
9. The implications I see with this source is that the newspaper article isn't filled with a lot of facts,
but just with what certain people want to hear.
10. For that reason and a couple others I have answered I give this article a 3.
Online: Economists Argue It's 'unfair' That College Athletes Aren't Paid
Frost, Aja. "Economists Argue It's 'unfair' That College Athletes Aren't Paid." USA Today. Cal Poly
SLO, 18 Feb. 2015. Web. 4 June 2015.
1. The primary audience for this source is anyone who has access to the internet and is interested in this
certain subject. It explains both sides of the subject to inform people of what it is all about. This could
contribute to my needs as a researcher or my paper.
2. If I decide to use it it could be useful to my project by getting the perspective of economists and
what they have to say on the subject.
3. Even though it is not from a sports writer I can detect a little bias because it is again from a
newspaper and she might give her own opinion on what the economists have to say.
4. From what I can tell from the works cited is that even though the article was published in a
newspaper the facts come from economists and it was written with the help of Cal Poly SLO which
gives it a scholarly side.
5. This source is very up to date within the last year and with this being a part of a newspaper I feel
the relevancy has a small window because there's not a lot you can write in a newspaper. It's just
something to let people know and then they can do more research on it.
6. I would say that the author has the credentials and the experience because she is a freelance
writer who does current events.
7.This certain subject will always be covered by the press as long as it is still relevant and there is a
dispute between both sides.
8. I believe that is has opened people's eyes about the subject and probably encouraged them to
research more about it.

9. The implications I see with this article is that it does not have a lot to do with the subject that I am
covering, but just what people think about it.
10. I am going to give this article a 3 because while it is scholarly and could be helpful but it is not over
what I need for my research project.
