PHY 022 Q3 SET A

1. Water is flowing in a pipe with a cross circular section but with varying
cross-sectional areas, and at all points the water completely fills the
pipe. (a) At one point in the pipe the radius is 0.150m. What is the
speed of the water at this point if the water is flowing in the pipe at a
steady rate of 1.20m3/s (b) At a second point in the pipe the water
speed is 3.80 m/s. What is the radius of this pipe at this point?
2. At one point in the pipeline the water speed is 3.00 m/s and the gauge
pressure is 5.00 x 104 Pa. Find the gauge pressure at a second point in
the line, 11.0m lower than the first, if the pipe diameter at the second
point is twice that of the first.
3. The Humber Bridge in England has the worlds longest single span,
1410m. Calculate the change in length of the steel deck of the span
when the temperature increases from -5.0 C to 18.0 C? Coefficient of
linear expansion of steel is 1.2 x 10-5 /K
4. A glass flask whose volume is 1000.00 cm 3 at 0.0C is completely filled
with mercury at this temperature. When flask and mercury are
warmed to 55.0 C, 8.95 cm3 of mercury overflow. If the coefficient of
volume expansion of mercury is 18.0 x 10 -5 /K , compute the coefficient
of volume expansion of the glass. Coefficient of volume expansion of
mercury is 18 x 10-5 /K
5. The outer diameter of a glass jar and the inner diameter of its iron lid
are both 725mm at room temperature (20.0 C) What will be the size
of the mismatch between the lid and the jar if the lid is briefly held
under hot water until its temperature rise s to 50.0C, without
changing the temperature of the glass? Coefficient of linear expansion
of iron is 0.09 x 10-5/K
6. You are given a sample of metal and asked to determine its specific
heat. You weigh the sample and find that its weight is 28.4N You
carefully add 1.25 x 104 J of heat energy to the sample and find that its
temperature rises 18.0 C. What is the samples specific heat?
7. Before going in for his annual physical, a 70.0kg man whose body
temperature is 37.0 C consumes an entire 0.355-L can of a soft drink
(mostly water) at 12.0 C. (a) What will his body temperature be after
equilibrium is attained? The specific heat of the mans body is 3840
J/kgK.
8. A glass vial containing a 16.0 g sample of an enzyme is cooled in an
ice bath. The bath contains water and 0.120kg of ice. The sample has
a specific heat of 2250J/kgK; the glass vial has mass of 6.00g and has a
specific heat of 2800 J/kgK. How much ice melts in cooling the enzyme
sample from room temperature (19.5C) to the temperature of the ice
bath? Specific heat of ice is 2100 J/kg K and the latent heat of fusion is
3.33 x 105 J/kg
