Community Types
Subject Area: Social Studies
Grade Level: 2nd grade
Time: 45+ Minutes or 2 day span broken up to 25 minutes
Lesson Overview/Rationale: I am using this lesson to give my students the opportunity to think
at a higher level, to engage in discussions, and to work collaboratively to recreate a community
with their own creativity.
Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to define what a community is and what it means to be a member of
a community, orally and written
Students will be able to identify different places with in their own community.
Students will cooperatively design a mural for their community.
Students will be able to orally list several communities that they are a part of.

This lesson requires the kidspiration software
application published by Inspiration Software, Inc.

Procedure/Lesson:
1. Open Community Types and review it with the students.

2. Ask students to open community Comparison from kidspiration


starter>Activities>Social Studies. They should try to use pictures to show what life is
like in urban, suburban, and rural areas by dragging out the pictures they want to use
from the Mystery Box. They will try also listing the characteristics of each community.

3. After students complete the diagram as well as they can independently, they should check
their diagram with an actual one and make adjustments where necessary. The reference
diagram cam provided on the smart board.
Assessment:

Students can be assessed on their complete community types projects and the details
they add. Are the characteristics in the right location? Is their information accurate? Is
everything spelled correctly?
If the students present their community types to the class, they can also be assessed on
the quality of their presentation.
