Do Now:
1) What are the 3 regions the early
Hawaiians divided the island into?
2) Would the ahupuaa system be able to
feed the population in the islands in today?
3) The island of Oahu is divided into how
many moku?
4) How did the early Hawaiians ensure that
resources would not be overused or wasted?

Hawaii Today
Hawaii is the most isolated population
center on Earth (about 2000 miles from
California, 4000 miles from Japan, 5000
miles from China and over 5000 miles
from the Philippines).
Population in 2010 was 1.3 million people.
Today, about 90% of the states food is
imported from the mainland.

Ancient Hawaii
At its peak, it is estimated that over 1
million Native Hawaiians lived throughout
the islands.
The early Hawaiians used natural
resources from 3 different regions on the
islands.
These regions included the mountains,
valleys and shore

The Three Regions

Mountains: rain forests, trees for canoe
building and housing, banana tree, wild
pigs, etc.
Valleys: farmland, fresh water streams,
taro, sweet potato, bananas, etc.
Shore: beaches, reefs, fishponds, salt and
seaweed gathering, fishing, etc.
