READING AND WRITING CORNER

Dear Parents/Guardians:
Welcome to TERM 2! Here is a preview of
what your child and you will be hearing about
this TERM! We hope that this information can be
helpful to you in keeping a strong connection
between your home and ours here at the Louis F.
Angelo. Thank you for taking the time to read
and discuss it with your child.

MATH CORNER
In term 2, we will be working on the
following math standards:

Division
Multiplying and Dividing
Decimals
Volume
Fractions (Term 3 is where we
will spend most of our time with
fractions, but we will review the
fraction standards from fourth
grade to help us prepare for
term 3)

We will also continue to revisit the

standards that were covered in term
1 we want to keep everything
SCIENCE CORNER
In term 2 we will be wrapping up our Unit on
Physical Science. We are exploring the
properties and states of matter and how
matter changes from one state to another. We
will learn about the various forms of energy in
our lives and in different environments. We will
also begin our Earth Science Unit. The water
cycle will be featured along with the role water
plays in shaping our Earth.

During TERM 2 grade 5 will be

working around the theme of
Exploration/Searching for
Understanding. Our main goal is to
work on the Common Core
standards for Massachusetts
through our literature and writing.
WHAT THAT MEANS IS. Students
need to be able to look at multiple
passages of literature, and be able
to compare them with how they are
written, and what their purpose is.
Students will be working on
OUR ZONES

This year, we are using a wonderful

program called the Zones of
Regulation. Here, children can better
cope with their feelings and develop
strategies to help them have
successful days at school. Here is a
peek at each of our zones. The Blue
zone- the body is slowing down. (Sad,
sick, and tired) Green zone- we are
ready to learn (calm, happy, and
proud) Yellow zone- The body needs to
slow down. (Frustrated, nervous,
scared)Red Zone- we need to use our

During Term 2, we will exploring the power of the sun
and investigating different forms of energy such as
light energy, chemical energy, electrical energy, and
thermal energy. During the month of January, we will
also be participating in the administration of the
ACCESS for English Language Learners. ACCESS
(Assessing Comprehension and Communication in
English from State to State) is given to English
Language Learners to provide a measurement of
academic language proficiency throughout the state
of Massachusetts, and in other states. In a few
months, you will receive a report that will identify
your childs language skills in social and academic
English. We use this information to monitor student
