Ch. 9, # 51. Which of these molecules is (are) not polar?

(a) CO (Hint: AX1E0 so molecular geometry is linear)

(b) PCl3

(Hint: AX3E1 so molecular geometry is triangular pyramidal)

(c) BCl3 (Hint: AX3E0 so molecular geometry is triangular planar)

(d) GeH4

(e) CF4

(Hint: AX4E0 so molecular geometry is tetrahedral)

(Hint: AX4E0 so molecular geometry is tetrahedral)

Which molecule has the most polar bonds? (This means which bonds are the most polar
not which molecule has the greatest number of polar bonds.) Hint: electronegativity
values from p. 348 are H = 2.1; B = 1.9; C = 2.4; O = 3.4; F = 4.0;
P = 2.0; Cl = 2.7; Ge = 1.9.

Ch. 9, # 62. Which of these molecules will form hydrogen bonds?

(a) CH2Br2

(b) CH3OCH2CH3

(c) H2NCH2COOH

(d) H2SO3 (note that the Hs are bonded to Os, not to S)

(e) CH3CH2OH

Ch. 10, #2. What are the conditions represented by STP?

Ch. 10, #18. Mercury has a density of 13.96 g/cm3. A barometer is constructed using an
oil with a density of 0.75 g/cm3. If the atmospheric pressure is 1.0 atm, what will be the
height, in meters, of the oil column in the barometer?
Ans: For both barometers, the external pressure is 1.0 atm. Pressure is force/area
and is always referred to a cross-sectional area of 1 unit of area. Recall that force = mass
x acceleration of gravity. So,
1atm

force mass1 g mass 2 g force

1atm .

Most terms cancel, leaving mass1 mass 2 .

Now, using reasoning, for a unit area on which the barometers liquid sits, the mass must
be the same for the two columns of liquid in order for the atmospheric pressure
supporting both to be the same. For the same mass of liquid, the column of less dense
liquid will be taller than the column of more dense liquid. So we can write:
oil hoil Hg hHg .

We can plug in the values given and solve for hoil:

(0.75 g/cm3)(hoil) = (13.96 g/cm3)(760 mm)
hoil =

Ch. 10, # 42. An automobile tire is inflated to a pressure of 3.05 atm on a rather warm
day when the temperature is 40 oC (two significant figures). The car is then driven to the
mountains and parked overnight. The morning temperature is -5.0 oC (also two
significant figures). What will be the pressure of the gas in the tire? Assume the volume
of the tire doesnt change.
Reason that if the tire cavity stays the same volume, the gas molecules will slow down as
the temperature goes down, and the pressure made by the gas molecules hitting the inside
walls of the tire cavity will go down.

Ch. 10, # 50. If 2.7 g Al metal is reacted with excess HCl, how many liters of H2 gas are
produced at 25 oC and 1.00 atm pressure?
