Problem # 2 (Example 5.1, Practical Reliability Engineering)

Problem # 3 (Problem 7, Practical Reliability Engineering)

7. Electrolytic capacitor leads are designed to withstand a repetitive load applied to a circuit board
mounted on a moving platform. The leads yield stress is normally distributed with the mean of 100 MPa
and the standard deviation of 20 MPa. The stress generated as a result of the repetitive load during the
capacitors life time is also normally distributed with the mean of 60 MPa and the standard deviation of
15 MPa:
a) Calculate the safety margin, SM.
b) Calculate the loading roughness, LR.
c) Calculate the expected reliability of the capacitor.

Problem # 4 (Example 2.30, RELIABILITY ENGINEERING AND LIFE TESTING)

Problem # 5
The stress developed in an engine component is known to be normally distributed with a mean of
350,000 MPa, and a standard deviation of 40,00 Mpa. The material strength distribution based on
expected temperature range and various other factors is known to be normal with mean of 820,00
Mpa and standard deviation of 80,00 Mpa. Calculate the conventional factors of safety and also
calculate the reliability of the component.

Problem # 6
Stress analysis on a component was performed under simulated operating conditions and
following eight observation were recorded. Compute Reliability based on given data.

Problem # 6
The load P acting on a bar has a mean value
= 10,000 N and a standard deviation = 1000N.
The mean value of the cross sectional area A is = 5 cm2 and a standard deviation of = 0.4
cm2. Find the mean and standard deviation of tensile stress on the bar.
