The document describes the rules of order of operations and provides an example dice game to help students learn and practice order of operations. The rules are: 1) perform calculations in parentheses, 2) perform exponents, 3) multiply and divide from left to right, 4) add and subtract from left to right. It also provides the mnemonic "PEMDAS" and "PURPLE ELEPHANTS MAY DESTROY A SCHOOL" to help remember the order. The dice game then instructs students to roll dice, place the numbers on a sheet using order of operations, and try to get closest to a target number for practice.

Rule 1: Perform any calculations inside parenthesis.
Rule 2: Next perform all exponent calculations. Rule 3: Then perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right. Division will be done first if it is to the left of multiplication. Rule 4: Finally perform all addition and subtraction, working from left to right. Subtraction will be done first if it is to the left of addition.
A dice game will help you learn Order of Operations. The
game is for 2 to 4 players. Level 1 is the beginning level and Level 3 is the advanced level. You should successfully complete Level 1 before going to Level 2, and Level 2 before going to Level 3. Copy the sheet you will use onto a blank piece of paper. Write your name or names at the top of the sheet and pick a die. Pick a six-, ten-, or twenty-sided die. The larger dice make for more of a challenge. Everyone should use the same size die. 1. Choose a target number (unless playing as a group). 2. Roll the die 7 times. Place the number where ever you choose on the game sheet. Two numbers can be discarded in the trash can.
3. Once the numbers have been placed, solve the
problem using order of operations. 4. The student closest to the target number wins. You should check each others answers for correctness. For variety, switch two or more numbers around to get closer. Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!!
