The Eagles and Hornets

visitors went on a 17-6 run

a 25-14 lead into the break.
It was really a story of
a real bad second quarter defensively and a lack
of rebounding, Marion
coach Brian Miller said.

STANTON For one
half, things looked really
good.
Then, the wheels fell off.
Reed City dropped a 46-38
decision to Central Montcalm in a CSAA Gold Division girls basketball game
Tuesday night.
The Coyotes led the Hornets 23-21 at halftime but
were outscored 17-4 in the
third quarter and trailed
38-27 going into the fourth.
Despite the loss, veteran
coach Brian Koopman saw
some positives.
I thought it was one
of the better games we
played, he said. We
moved well but the third
period killed us.
We came out flat and the
offense didnt move.

BOYS HOOPS
Onekama 77, Buckley 60

ONEKAMA Six games

in, theyd been playing
with a maturity beyond
their years.
This time, that youth
caught up with them a bit.
Buckley went on the road
for the first time, and the
Bears struggled in the middle quarters in dropping a
77-60 decision to Onekama
in boys non-conference
basketball action Tuesday
night.
The Bears (5-2) led the
unbeaten Portagers 18-15
after the opening quarter,
but the hosts stormed back
with a 29-8 run in the second to take a 44-26 lead into
the break.
We lost our composure
there a bit, Buckley coach
Blair Moss said. This was
our first road game of the
year, and thats exactly
what it looked like.
Onekama took a 57-35
lead into the final stanza.
Freshman standout Denver Cade had 25 points
while Bryce Guer nsey
added 11 for the Bears, who
dont get much of a break
as the week goes on.
I told the kids this will
be a tough week, Moss
said.
Weve got Frankfort
Thursday, so its going to be
another tough road game
for them.
Were going to have to
grow up real fast, he added. We made some mistakes we havent made over
the last couple of weeks,
and were just going to have
to correct those mistakes.

Manton 68, Evart 41

EVART Give it some
time and the shots will
start falling.
Manton struggled early
against the zone defense
but going quickly enough
to score a 68-41 win over Evart in a Highland Conference boys basketball game
Tuesday night.
The Rangers led just 1610 after the first quarter
but outscored the Wildcats
25-13 in the second quarter.

Aoki finalizes Giants deal

By JANIE McCAULEY
The Associated press

SAN FRANCISCO
Nori Aoki is offering a bold
challenge to World Series
MVP Madison Bumgarner,
one of his new San Francisco Giants teammates.
"I've heard that Madison
likes to wrestle, I think I'm
going to initiate the wrestling," the left fielder joked
Tuesday.
Aoki brings more than
just a big personality and
sense of humor to the

World Series champions.

Manager Bruce Bochy
is projecting him as the
team's starting left fielder,
while noting Aoki's versatility allows him to fill in
for Angel Pagan in center
field and Hunter Pence in
right as needed. Pagan will
begin spring training next
month as the leadoff hitter, another job Aoki can
handle with his speed and
ability to steal bases.
"Of course I'd like to hit
at the top of the order but
that's going to be his deci-

sion," Aoki said, speaking

through regular interpreter Kosuke Inaji, who joins
him in the move to the Bay
Area.
Aoki finalized his $4.7
million, one-year contract
Monday and was formally
introduced a day later at
AT&T Park. Both sides appear hopeful he could stick
around beyond this season.
Bochy figures Aoki might
reconsider the wrestling
match once he lines up next
to the 6-foot-5, 235-pound
Bumgarner.

They played a zone in

the first quarter and we
didnt shoot well against
it, Manton coach Ryan
Hiller said. In the second
quarter, we hit five threes.
It wasnt a great night
for shooting, though.
Manton led 41-23 at halftime and 53-34 going into
the fourth quarter.
Hunter Ruell paced the
Rangers with 17 points
while Treh Helsel had 12
points and 11 rebounds.
Wyatt Baker had 11 points
and 15 rebounds while
Jayden Perry had 10 points
and dished out six assists.
Hiller also commended
the play of Jonah Nelson
and Chandler Shazri for
their defensive energy.
Manton hosts Beal City
on Friday in another key
league game.

This was a good bounceback game for us, Hiller

said. We got it handed to
us last Thursday. Youve
got to win or you are out
of the Highland race real
fast.
Manton won the JV
game 51-36. Jacob Teed,
Darius Potter and Preston
Shazri had 16 points apiece
for the Rangers.

Beth Haven 53, Heritage

Christian 26

SHERIDAN There was

improvement from the first
meeting but the end result
was the same when Heritage Christian traveled to
Sheridan to take on Beth
Haven Tuesday.
The Patriots lost to Beth
Haven 53-26 but coach
Bill Goodwill said he saw
some points of improvement from the first time
they played. That included
playing even with Beth Haven in the first half, which
Heritage Christian didnt
do the first time.
We played even in the
first half and we didnt do
that in the first game, he

said.
Beth Haven led 15 to 11 after the first quarter and 2320 at the half. In the second
half Goodwill said Beth
Haven players couldnt
miss and as a result they
expanded their lead to 4026 heading into the fourth
quarter.
Nick Potgeter paced the
Patriots with 12 points
while Curtis Reitz had six
points.
Heritage Christian hosts

Central Montcalm 51,

Reed City 46

REED CITY Call this

one a rough night.
Reed City struggled to
start and at the end in a
51-46 loss to Central Montcalm in a CSAA Gold Division boys basketball game
Tuesday night.
I did a very poor job of
getting the guys ready to
play tonight, Reed City
coach Dean McGuire said.
That is on the coach.
The Coyotes were up
11-10 after the first quarter and 24-17 at halftime
before Central Montcalm
outscored them 34-22 in the
second half to come away
with the win.
Reed Citys shooting
made it a tough night, too,
as the Coyotes shot just 34
percent from the floor.
Mykel Dillard led Reed
City with 13 points while
Chris Barton and Andre
Jones each scored eight.
The Coyotes host Chippewa Hills on Friday.

Pine River 76, NMC 61

LEROY Fun for the
fans.
Maybe not so much for
the coaches.
Pine River used a terrific
first half of shooting to
jump out to an early lead,
then held on to top Northern Michigan Christian,

76-61 in a wild Highland

Conference boys basketball
contest Tuesday night.
The Bucks got off to a
great start, leading 26-10
after one quarter and 44-23
at the break while shooting
better than 50 percent from
the floor.
It was a fun game to
watch as a spectator, but
not fun for a coach, Pine
River coach Brian Goodenow said of the back-andforth pace. We were using
four-minute rotations and
had some guys getting used
to each other, but it affected
our defense a little.
We shot the ball well,
and in the second half
NMC shot well.
For Comet coach Dale Veddler, the first quarter was
one hed like back.
You take away that first
quarterthey got us by
five in the second quarter,
and we beat them in the
third and fourth, he said.
They put us on our heels
right at the start. I give our
kids a lot of credit for hanging in there.
We turned the ball over
just nine times, but we just
didnt defend well, he added. The kids did a pretty
good job on the boards, but
when you get a team shooting that well, youre not going to beat a lot of teams.
Mitch McDonald paced
the Bucks with 22 points,
six boards and three assists, while Marcus Washington and Lucas Harris
each added 11 points.
Lukas Sizemore had seven points; Tyler Wing had
five rebounds and three
assists; Mason Powell had
three assists; and Brandon
Fulks had five assists.
For NMC, Kade Ellens
had a game-high 24 points,
while Jonathon Perry added 17 and Jordan Eisenga
had 11.
Pine River hosts Lake
City Friday, while NMC
hosts crosstown rival
McBain the same night.
