Tech Degree I & II Semester (Combined) Examination June 2011 IT/CS/EC/CE/ME/SE/EB/EVEE/FT 107 BASIC ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND ELECTRONICS (2006 Scheme) Time : 3 Hours Maximum Marks : 100 (A) ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING PART A (Answer ALL questions) (5x 4=20) 1. (@)_ Why domestic appliances are connected in parallel? Give comparison with series circuit. (b) State and explain Conlomb’s law on electrostatics. (©) Define magnetic flux density and field strength in magnetic circuits. (4) _ Explain the generation of altemating voltages and currents. (©) Distinguish between star and delta connection in three phase circuits. PART B (2x 15 =30) Il (a) __ State Thevenin’s theorem in electric circuits. 6) (b) Use Thevenin’s theorem to find the current through 7Q. in the following circuit. (10) OR Il. (a) Explain what is meant by the terms electric field intensity and flux density. What relation (5) exists between these two? (b) Two parallel metal plates of large area are spaced at a distance of 10mm from each other (0) in air. A sheet of glass Smm thick with a relative permitivity of 6 is introduced between the plates, A potential difference of SO00V is applied between the plates. Determine the electric field intensities in air and in the glass sheet. IV. (a) __ Distinguish between statically induced emf and dynamically induced emf. (5) (b) A mild steel ring of 30cm mean circumference has a cross sectional area of 6 cm’ and has (10) a winding of 500 turns on it. ‘The ring is cut through at a point so as to provide an air gap of Imm in the magnetic circuit. It is found that a current of 4A in the winding produces a flux density of IT in the air gap. Find (i) relative permeability of the mild steel (i) inductance of the winding. OR V. What is the application of a zener diode? Briefly explain the working of any one transducer. How amplitude and frequency of a waveform can be measured in a CRO? ‘What is modulation? What are the needs of modulation? PART B (2x 15=30) What are the different configurations of transistors? Compare the performance of each. (15) oR Write brief notes on: as) FET Gi SCR Gi) LED With the help of a neat block diagram explain the working of a CRO. What are the (13) applications of CRO? OR Distinguish between AM & FM. (5) Draw the block diagram of a general communication system. Explain the various blocks. (10)
