TheHildaTabaTechniqueallowsstudentstocreateaconceptorassumptiontostudyortryto
proveandcanbeusedtohelpstudentsmakeconnectionsamongwordsthatarealready
establishedorbeingusedinwordstudyorvocabulary.Theactivitybelowbeginswithoneword
tobranchofffrom,however,ateachercouldbeginwithagroupofwords(step3)andhave
studentsdevelopaconcepttostudyfromthere.
1. Explaintostudentsthattodaytheywillbedevelopingwhatitistheywillbelearningfor
thenextcoupleofweeksallbasedonwhattheyknowaboutoneword:creativity.
2. Ingroupsof5to8,havestudentswriteasmanywordsthattheycanthinkofwhenthey
hearthewordcreativity.
3. Aftertwotofiveminutes,dependingontheageofyourstudents,bringthegroupback
andcollectaclasslistofatleast40wordsinaplacetheentireclasscanseeallthe
words.
4. Giveeachgroupapackofsmallstickynotesandhavestudentscopythewordson
individualstickynotes(onewordperpage).
5. Thentellthegroupstoputthewordsintogroupsbasedonanycharacteristicsthatthey
findimportant.Tellthemtheonlyruleisthatallthewordsmustfindtheirwayintoa
group.
6. Oncestudentshavetheirwordintogroups,havethemgiveeachgroupalabelthelabel
needstobeonetothreewordslonganddescribetheirgroup.
7. Next,studentsshouldtakethelabelsandcreateadefinitionforcreativityusingthe
labelstheycreated.
8. Postthedefinitionsofcreativityaroundtheroomasanchorchartsforreferences
throughouttheyear.
