Theme
Competition site is to be considered as site intended
for realistic innovative development, as the city is
eager to realize the project. The aim is to create
generator of urban life with introducing diverse
housing typologies from small apartment as start up
apartments to tourist dwellings integration, with
emphasis on articulated open Mediterranean spaces.
Competition site could be transformed by means of
typological innovations into an area of hybrid
urbanity, enabling new, emerging lifestyles.

Site

Mediterranean city of Izola (transl.: island) is one

of three coastal cities which together are forming
a conurbation on a small Slovenian coast (46
km). Izola is located 20 km south from Italian
border (Trieste) and 20 km north from Croatian
border on the peninsula Istria. City was founded
in Roman times on a small island. The city has
tradition in fishing and fishing industry (the
biggest fishing industry in north Adriatic sea), but
tourism and commerce are growing.

Competition site is located at the edge of

homogenous city structure. It is surrounded by
agricultural landscape, city internal ring and
abandoned sand excavation that is under
urbanisation with mixed development. North
edge is defined by pine boulevard and housing
villa-blocks from 50`s and 60`s. Site is positioned
in the natural amphitheatre sloping towards the
sea and in the 15 minutes walking distance from
the city centre.

Programme
Diverse housing programmes, commercial and
local services, small university programme,
offices and parking are to be planned on
competition site. Open space articulation should
also be a programmatic issue, an urban park for
the whole area should be provided. Adjacent
patch is intended for public space and
programs -open air sport facilities, etc

Issues

functional : The goal is to create balanced multifunctional area with emphasis

on housing and its connection to open public space. To create an area that
should respond to the diverse edge conditions - from agricultural landscape,
housing neighbourhood, boulevard, school, and sport activities.

social : The aim is reinvention of Mediterranean type of dwelling and its relation
with open public space that could act as a contemporary social space. As Izola is
popular tourist resort, integration of housing and tourist dwellings could give
project additional relevance.

perceptual : Attraction of the site is represented with dramatic views towards

the old city center, the sea and Alpine mountains to the north. The site is
characterised with the abandoned site of passenger railway.
